Default high pitch whine from drivetrain.

07 AWD compass with the 5 speed transmission.
It makes a high pitch whine which is very noticeable around 65-70 mph. If I let up on the gas peddle it stops, shove in the clutch and rev the engine it doesn't do it.
It's there in every gear but not as loud.
It's been doing it since we bought it. 60k miles on the clock.
Has anyone else experienced this.

well I did some googling and apparently this is an issue with 07-08 patriots as well. Chrysler issued a service bulletin regarding it. They replace the transaxle mount and if that doesn't fix it, they replace the transmission...so the mount replacement is just a bandaid apparently. going to stop by the dealership and see if I can find anything out.

Here is the info from the patriot forum.
Quote:
T355 5 Speed Manual Transmission

Issue Description:

If transmission being replaced for high pitched whine 65 - 70 mph, perform the following:

Verify vehicle build between 9/20/07 - 9/20/08

Replace the rear transaxle mount with part number 68032586AE

If objectionable final drive gear whine remains, replace transaxle with a unit containing a build date of May 12, 2008 or later. The build date is found on the bar code label located on top of the bell housing (TTU1338xxxxx) - corresponds to May 12th 2008 or 133rd day of 200.

re: replacement of a rear transaxle mount as a solution to the high pitched whine...with a potential replacement of the transmission (!) as a final solution...

is there any more info on this? My 2007 Compass started doing this a few months ago- whining at about 50-60 km/h.

how serious is this?

Mine has acquired the identical symptoms. A whine-no vibrations. Gets louder the faster you travel, clutch in-no noise, engine decellerating vehicle-no noise, apply any pressure to accelerator pedal-noise returns. No changes in turns, no difficulty shifting gears, nothing grinding. Transmission fluid-okay, haven't checked the PTU or diff fluid yet. Engine itself sounds good.

Any insight is greatly appreciated.

I checked out the link, and it seems my symptoms are just a little bit different than what the patriots are experiencing. I'm bringing mine to a local shop today to see if my mechanic can figure it out. I'll post any findings.

Mine does what yours is doing. It's extremely noticeable at highway speeds.
My plans to try and fix it or at least lessen the whine include changing the trans mount like they suggest in the service bulletin and changing the trans fluid to synthetic.
I will be interested in hearing what your mechanic tells you.

Well,
after a .5hr road test which included slow and stop n go city driving to highway speeds, and then running the compass up to speed on the hoist and listening with a probe at the same time....the diagnosis is a bearing on one of the shafts and the layshaft is most suspect.

Quote for the transmission pull and overhaul is $1078.00 with parts expected to be $100-200.00. It's pricey, but it's a bearing so I can drive it till the sounds drives me crazy then get it swapped.

Not sure if that will help your case, but good luck with your plans!
