Key fob not detected vehicle totally dead

Just want to get into my Compass after dinner and the car would not unlock. I used the key in the driver side door to unlock it which of course it off the alarm. I then attempted to start the vehicle and the dash display stated key fob not detected. The vehicle is now dead on the side of the road and I have no way to get it started.

Has anyone had this issue?

I believe if the battery in your key fob is dead, you can press the start/stop button with the key fob to get it going. Like it needs to be really close to detect the fob. Good luck!

From the compass manual on page 24:

"NOTE: If the ignition state/mode does not change with the
push of a button, the key fob may have a low or dead
battery. In this situation, a back up method can be used to
operate the ignition switch. Put the nose side (side opposite
of the emergency key) of the key fob against the ENGINE
START/STOP button and push to operate the ignition."

Yeah I asked about the whole what if the battery in the fob dies scenario before buying then again with the delivery person to make sure. I was told just as joninpa posted. Use emergency key to get in the door then use key fob end opposite the key to push the start button. I think there is a RF chip (Which does not require a battery) in the fob and a weak transmitter around or even in the start button that picks up the chips ID and allows the engine to start. If this works please report back so we will know in the future what to tell others.

Best of luck!

It did work, shocking though brand new 500 miles and the fobs are not detected. Strange that the dealer even didn’t know about this issue. It’s currently there now and they said they will check for a TSB hopefully they find something because this is not a good issue to have.

Glad you got moving again. The compass may be new but there is no way to know how long the battery has been sitting in that fob. If the jeep sat on the dealer lot for a long time it may have a drained battery. I would try changing the battery and see if that solves the issue.

Jasmine, as I appreciate this response it would of been more helpful had the rep from roadside said “can you start it via the manual fob to ignition way”

Instead they wanted to just flat bed the vehicle out. As well as my dealer states the topology report from the vehicle shows nothing of that error.

Isn’t it strange how with today’s technology the truck doesn’t log when a door is unlocked or a fob is not detected?

It’s rather unsettling that this could happen again and again without any resolution.

No because
1. The truck is brand new 500 miles
2. Both fobs did the same thing.

Dealer didn’t see anything (of course)

You're probably right. Its is unlikely to be the fob battery. But, they could be dead. A good way to eliminate bad fob battery would be to put a fresh one in, and try it out. It's probably the least-expensive "trouble shooting" step you could possibly attempt. Process of elimination, start with the easy stuff.

I see from other posts you have done a lot of electrical fiddling with your Jeep. Hopefully none of that has affected the Jeep's ability to detect the fob's signal.

I could do that, I don’t believe the LED Bulbs would affect this. I’ll monitor It and proceed from here.

Could just be a weird software glitch. I had something similar happen on my '13 Fusion TI. It had keyless entry, tried to get in, that didn't work. Luckily as a Ford it had the keypad (though mine was capacitive). Got into the car and tried to start it and got an Error that the key wasn't detected. Ran into the house and grabbed my spare. Same result. So I remembered about the emergency transceiver in the armrest. Car started up and worked fine. Went to were I needed to go took out my keyfob powered down the car and did my business. Went to open the door forgetting about the issues from earlier and it worked fine and was able to start the car without placing the key into the cubby hole in the arm rest. Never had an issue after that.
