Exclamation Check Engine Light: Stop Safely Vehicle Will Shut Off Soon

Hello all,

Let's see if anyone knows anything about this issue:

My Compass threw a check engine light at me today, and it was very strange. Car was on, driving on the road, i had to turn around to go back home for a minute, so i parked but left the car running. I got back in, reversed, and as soon as i went into drive my check engine illuminated with a message in the middle of the dash saying "Service Engine, Stop Safely Vehicle Will Shut Off Soon". So, being nervous, I pulled off onto the side of the road and shut it down for 30 seconds.

Turned it back on, check engine was still on, but the message was no longer there. I had a place i needed to be so I continued on cautiously. I made it where i needed to go and about 45 minutes after, turned the car back on but the light was no longer on.

I hooked up the diagnostic tool to the computer and it gave me this code: P2AF5

Looking it up on google, there is absolutely nothing that comes up with any info. Has anyone experienced this problem? Or know what this code may mean? I'm gonna call my dealer for an appointment but Im sure Ill have to wait 5 weeks to be able to take it in.

Thanks all!

IMO, unless I code/problem doesn’t reoccurs after it has been cleared or disappears, it was most likely not a real issue but a software glitch. Even a dealers primary fix method is clearing the code and asking the customer to bring the car back if it reappears.

I have read several post hear talking about the “stop safety....” message. In all cases, engine turned off as soon as the car stopped. So yours look different that the engine continued running after you stopped. BTW, below is a link to the description of the error code that you read

I like Tripod's answer. It may just be a glitch.

Also, check your dipstick. Maybe your oil is low. These engines use a lot. The light may have come on because you were parked at enough of an angle that the sensor couldn't detect any oil.

Tripod, thanks for the info. Will keep an eye on it.

Jasmine, believe it or not, 24 hours earlier it was at the dealer getting an oil change, so that would be a weird coincidence, lol!

Unless someone didn't tighten the drain plug or short-filled it. That happens. Also a chance they accidentally messed up something while they were doing the change.
