Exclamation My jeep/dealership experience.

First off sorry for the long rant/post here, I just wanted to share my experience I have had so far. Maybe some can relate.

Well where do I start, I was in the market for a new vehicle. I wanted something bigger than my 2011 Toyota Camry. I am 6 foot 6 and that wasn’t cutting it anymore. So, I looked around I knew I wanted a small-mid size SUV for now until I can save up for something bigger in the future. liked the Mitsubishi outlander sport, Mazda cx-5 and the Chevy trax. I was close to buying the Mitsubishi, but the dealer wasn't willing to work with me, so I walked.

That’s where the jeep came in. I went down the road after I was suggested to check these out. I immediately seen one that caught my eye. So, I wanted to see what I could do and decided to talk to a sales person. I was told this was a demo car, so the price was 5k under new with only 5k miles on it with 100k certified warranty. I was cool with that and it seemed like a pretty good deal. So, I test drove it, and noticed the engine stop start light was on. Not thinking anything of it I mentioned that to the sales person and he said ok it would be fixed before you picked it up if you go with this car. I said that’s fine I like this car it drove very nice and was a good bang for the buck comparted to the other cars I was looking at.

After signing the papers this is where the excitement started to get flushed down the toilet. First the sales person never put a temp registration in my car still to this day I don’t have any registration. I have called numerous times and he always tell me it should be there this week, this has been 4 weeks now since I got the car. Secondly and probably the weirdest thing about this car/deal is one day my girlfriend and I were having lunch in my car about 3 days after I picked it up. She looks in the glove compartment and sees a paper. She opens it up and it’s a death certificate to the person who owned this vehicle before me out of state all the information everything. Also, we found the receipt to this car they payed 14k at an auction and sold it to me for 22k. We were in shock that they claim to do to a 100-point inspection, clean etc... But completely leave someone’s death certificate in the car with all their info like that was just plain wrong. To add insult to injury to everything I referred my friend to the same dealership and he bought a vehicle. I was supposed to get $ for referring someone to the dealer, I asked my salesman about that and he gave me every excuse in the book on why I won’t get it. My sales person also keeps calling my girlfriend and I asking where the rims are to my Camry I traded in. I have factory rims and snow tires on the car when I traded it in. They asked if I had another set of tires for this car (aka all seasons) I said No I only have custom rims I put on in the summer, but I don’t want to part with those and that was the last we ever talked about them. We can’t believe that they would call us numerous times after the deals have been made, everything we have been through to have the audacity to call us and ask for things 1 month after the fact.

Now comes the car issues. As mentioned I noticed the auto stop start issue since I test drove the car. That wasn’t fixed as promised so I had to go back 2 weeks later just for them to tell me they have to order a part. So last Friday I took it in and it got fixed. I also mentioned other issues I am experiencing. The back window only half defrosts, the radio/entertainment screen is turning white, the climate control doesn’t save settings and the back-window seal is warped causing air to go through the window. Basically, what I was told is that they must submit paperwork to see if this is covered under warranty. They claim to have fixed the screen however that is coming back again, they claim to have updated it but as I was driving home everything went haywire and started randomly calling people as I am driving. The window seal was fixed thankfully. So now I am waiting to get a call back on the rear window and will have to take this vehicle in again for the screen and climate control.

TLDR;

In the market for Small SUV

Bought jeep compass

Was told it was a demo car come to find out it was an out of state auction car

Dealer never put on temp registration

Referred a coworker to the dealer and he bought a brand-new vehicle, was supposed to get money for the referral but was given excuses on why I didn’t qualify

Traded in 2011 Toyota Camry

Found a death certificate and auction sales receipt in glove box of new compass

Have issues with Screen, rear window defroster, climate control and auto stop start.

Tried to get issues fixed but they must wait to hear back from warranty.

Still don’t have registration 1 month in

Sales person keeps calling my girlfriend and I 1 month after deal was made to ask for items for Camry (Custom wheels not even factory, Factory ones are on vehicle)

Sitting here Writing this.

As requested by members. The dealer that this happened with is Doan Dodge, Chrysler, Jeep, Ram. I will refrain from giving out any names of sales people or managers however.

Don't be surprised if nothing happens. I bought my Compass in February of 2018. At 10,700 miles the engine blew. It took them almost a month to replace it. No communication from the dealership (I called them multiple time and got let me look into it). Soon after I got it back the tensioner and serpentine belt had to be replaced. I went thru arbitration with FCA (the arbitrator used to work for Chrysler) and I was pretty much told oh well, so sad. This was the first Chrysler product I have ever bought and it will be the last. I went to two dealerships that told me they couldn't do anything for me until 2020 (they had to "buy" all the remaining 2018s on their lots) so I was stuck with a vehicle that I have zero confidence in. Jeep Cares was useless. You will probably get better results beating your head against the wall.

Good luck to you.

It seems jeep customer care reached out to the dealer and it seems things will be straightend out. The dealers head manager contacted me and wants to make it right. So my car goes in Tuesday and hopefully everything works out.

I'm glad the corp is getting involved. Looks to me like the sales rep really screwed up.

The out-of-state auction car scares me just a little. Especially if they told you it was a demo. It could be a flood car that wasn't damaged out but got spiffed up instead. That would explain the screwy electronics.

The car got dropped off today at the dealer. They are replacing the back window and possibly going to replace the screen due to the color issues and the glitches.

However the climate control issue is apparently a feature. When the climate control detects its cold out it adjusts itself accordingly. I mentioned it was a 50* degree day and completely random when it happens. Doesn't matter if it's via push button or remote start. But they are still telling me it is normal. So it's normal for me to set a climate tempature and mode I want and sometimes it stays like that and other times the car decides. I'm not buying it for a second. It's a known issue with these cars.

Also noticed a tiny bit of condisation in my rear light and was told that is normal. Jeep has a complex ventilation system and it's doing its job that's why I see it. Wasn't sold on that explanation but I'm not sure about that or not.

Read all of your sales paperwork carefully. I am not sure how clearly demo is defined, but a demo should be a non registered car that has been driven with dealer plates.

If they sold it to you as a car where you are the first person to title it, it should not have been purchased, previously titled, resold at auction.

I'd separate out the "intial quality" issues with the titling issues. The initial quality issues any Jeep dealer should be able to fix and will be paid by FCA. If you were sold a used car when your docs say new I would be extremely upset, reading up on your home state laws and insisting they buy back the vehicle.

Previous ownership and the auction process will hurt resale on the car. More questions and unknowns.

Got my car back after a week. Back window is fixed and the climate control seems to be fixed. However the screen is worse now than ever. When pressed the corner straight up basically warp every time I touch the screen. On top of that I got out of my car after turning it off and locking it to come back a little while later and the screen was still on it never shut off. I'm frustrated to the max with this right now. Every time I go to the dealer they "update" something. What the hell could be left to update. It's obviously a hardware issue.

I have said it before and I will say it again, "This is my first and last FCA product that I will ever buy." In my opinion, the COMPASS is a lemon. I know people on here will say that they love theirs and haven't had any issues, but if you look on this forum there are so many people that are having or have had issues. I traded in a perfectly good Ford Fusion for this POS. Worst thing I ever did. People will also say that the other car companies have problems with their vehicles as well. True. But in all the New Fords that I have ever had, I have NEVER had one that had anywhere near the issues this COMPASS has. Hopefully in February I can get rid of this POS and get something that I can rely on. My rant is over, thank you for taking the time to read it.

The worst part is I traded my Toyota camry in for this car and haven't even made the first payment yet and it's been in the shop 3 times so far. Last time it was in the shop I had a loaner car for 7 days. I thought jeep would have been a little better than this. Now I'm regretting not getting the Mitsubishi outlander I was also looking at.

Something like ~300k 2nd gen compasses were sold just in the US between 2016 and 2018 (link below). As a comparison, from 2006 to 2016, 375k 1st gen compass were sold. So the second gen compass will most likely pass the 10 year sales total of 1st gen in 3 years.

How many active members this forum have? I doubt there are more than 150 active users. And like you said, forums like this exaggerate the appearance of problems since people who research their issues find this forum and post it here. Number of complaints/issues this forum gets for the sheer number of cars on the road is ver small.

Every product have a chance to be defective, let that be a car or a coffee mug. And of course more sophisticated something is, the chances of problems increase since you have more "things" that can cause a problem. Compass is a rather sophisticated car for its price range with 4wd drive, a lot of electronics and a rather complex engine (and transmission). If the car had any major, fleet wide problem, this forum would be flooded with complains and news of failing compasses would be all over the news. The fact that it is not means there is not anything out of the ordinary with the car.

The car now is throwing up the auto stop/start error again. Along with the craptastic screen. This might go down as the biggest regret I have ever done. I wish I could return this thing.

Jeepcare called me and I missed the call. Called back 15 mins later and left a voice mail. Called again on Tuesdayaand left another message. Haven't heard anything back from them as of writing this. The car is parked with the error still present. Along with all the other issues this car has.

I am considering contacting some one for legal advice at this point. I have put less than 900 miles on this car and it's been in the shop more than I have owned it. Not happy at all.

Have you called FCA directly, if not I can give you a number to start a ticketed process? Another question is there another jeep dealership nearby? As long as it is bumper to bumper it is pretty much all billable to FCA and like myself, you can have a paid loaner car for over 3 months while they figure it out.

PM me if you want to talk more, just got my horrible nightmare over finally......

I have been trying to call FCA for the past week. No one picks up and it keeps going to voicemail with no call backs. I just got a hold of someone who couldn't help at all, Basically saying they cant help and they will put a request in for someone to call me. I asked to speak to supervisors and managers and kept being told that was impossible. I am disgusted at the level of customer service from this company.

At this point I will be contacting a lawyer to get help. I put less than 1000 miles on this and its already been in the shop going on 4 times and still nothing besides the back window has been fixed. Its unbelievable.

So I talked with FCA. Basically they can only help me with warranty issues. They mentioned the sales manager told them they couldn't find any issues and that's it. They can't really do anything past that. They told me to contact the district manager or the owner of the dealer. So I have filed a BBB complaint and will be filing a complaint with the NYS attorney General tomorrow.

Thanks.

We have talked with the sales manager and he said they will return/exchange the car due to all the issues we have experienced. I unfortunately am getting a weird feeling about the whole situation though. I guess I will see today when we go to the dealer and sit down with the sales manager.

Wow! A decent dealer! I hope they treat you right.

I once had a miserable vehicle and was able to trade it (only 6 months old) on a slightly used new model year with only 2000 miles on it by picking up three additional payments. The replacement vehicle was golden. No doubt the dealer made some money on that, but they could have told me to go pound sand.

So I'm here now and as I figured the sales manager didn't help us at all. He straight up lied to us over the phone now denies ever saying he will return the car. At this point I am getting legal involved. I should not have to deal with the stress and aggrovation of this.

Potentially final *update *

So after a long stressful conversation with the sales manager we asked to speak to someone above him. The way the vehicle was sold to us to the issues the vehicle still has was unacceptable. Then the lies we got today was the icing on the cake. We ended up going to another dealer and they worked with us to get out of the peice of junk we were sold. Unfortunately I went with something other than a jeep and quite honestly due to this experience I will never look at a dodge/Fiat product again.

That said. I'd like to thank everyone who has been supportive on here and gave helpful advice.

Put the dealer and sales manager on blast in here. That way people can possibly avoid similar situations or at least go into a dealing with them informed of how their practices might be. No need to keep it a secret. Who, what, and where?

Conversely, if people have a good experience with a dealer, give their info as well. We're all here to share and learn from each other.

Good idea! I like to say nice things about people so I'll put in a good word for my dealer. Bob Mariano's in Concord, NH. Very competent and ethical sales and service departments. I started with them when they were an AMC/Pontiac/Buick dealer. They had a chance to sell me a new transmission for my Pontiac but instead they found a $100 fix that carried me another 100,000 miles. By that stroke of honesty they sold another 1/2 dozen vehicles. When they dropped GM and went all Chrysler I stayed with them. I think I've bought seven vehicles from them over the years.
