2018 Jeep Compass Saves my Life

Evening all...I have a 2018 Jeep Compass Latitude Laser Blue with black roof.

I was driving home to Pennsylvania from Wilmington Delaware on Saturday July 13 around 10:45 pm. I was on I-95 just north of Wilmington in the passing lane. I can’t tell you my speed because I don’t know it. I reached over to retrieve my vape pen from the passenger seat as I was alone in the car. This did take my eyes of the road for a second or two. When I got my eyes back on the road I seen a car literally feet away in-front of me. This vehicle had no four-ways lights activated nor were the tail lights activated. I had no time to react and ending up striking the car in the rear. Judging from the pictures, it appears I may have tried to swerve through natural reactions. My car started to spin. The car finally came to rest upright thank god across both lanes of I-95. All air bags did deploy with the exception of the passenger side side curtains. I was removed from the vehicle by the gracious people who stopped to assist. I then was able to see my car as well as the other car I just struck. My initial reaction was to the people who helped me was to ask if the people in other car were ok. They replied there was no one in the car. I asked again are you sure. It was later confirmed that there was no one in the car that was left in the passing lane of a major interstate at night. My injuries aren’t life threatening. I do have a broken clavicle that was repaired by surgery this morning. While on the scene I did loose consciousness and was flown by Delaware State Police to the hospital. I was flown as a trauma 1 patient. There was a fear that my head struck the windshield as I had a bleeding injury on my forehead. I still am not sure if I did in fact hit the windshield.

All but 1 tires were dislodged from the wheels on my car during the accident and the car still remained upright. The only damage to the interior of the car with the exception of the gear shift surround being pushed out and the air bags deployed is in tact. Not only I am amazed at how well the Compass held up with blunt force I subjected it to I am forever grateful for being able to type this message today. The front windshield is cracked but from seeing the car the next day it does not appear any other glass is broken. I am currently awaiting word from my insurance company on the status of the car. Repairable or total loss.

I have begun the search for a new vehicle. And yes a Jeep. Actually a 2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited X with all safety option installed. The advance safety feature of the Compass are the driving force for me and will always be the driving force no matter what the cost.

I'm glad you're OK!

As for the cut on your head, when I had my wreck a month ago after it was all over my glasses and fit-over sunglasses were on top of my head. I can only figure the airbag contacted my face enough to push them up there. My windshield was broken too, but nothing ever contacted it that I can see. I suspect that was just from body stress, but I don't really know why.

Start car-shopping. My Compass wasn't hurt nearly as bad as yours and it was totaled. Those airbags are c$1000 each so you've spent that much before they even get to the first scratch on the paint. No doubt you've got major damage to the most expensive parts of the vehicle (drivetrain) too.

For my part, I'm not sure I'd trust a vehicle that had been in a wreck as serious as yours. A good repair job can make it look shiny and new, but I'd wonder if the technology and the sensors to make the airbags work was fixed right and God forbid I needed them again, would they work?

Again, I'm glad you're OK.

The worst part right now is waiting for the insurance company. I have gap on the car so I am not worried about that. It is waiting for the insurance company. I had to call them multiple times just to get the car moved from the towing facility. I live an hour and half from where the car is being kept so it’s not just a hop skip and jump away. I already have financing for a new Jeep Compass high altitude but can’t receive the loan until the insurance company send the letter to total the car. I decided to go back into the Jeep Compass because a I feel that car saved my life and it looks great. I was deciding on a Grand Cherokee Limited X but they don’t have any great safety stars. Government doesn’t rate it. Sweet looking vehicle but I also need to be feel safe inside it. The Compass has already proven that to me.

I'm glad you're staying in the Compass family! I did too, and I think I like my new Compass better than my dear departed one, 'cept for the color. I'm experiencing much less oil consumption, getting even better fuel economy, and the drivetrain noise is minimal. I don't know how they tweaked the 2019s, but it seems snappier too, and the tranny does less gear-hunting on the hills.

I didn't compare the Compass safety to the GC like you did, but I'm impressed enough to consider safety as major factor in my decision to get another Compass.

Picked up a 2019 Compass High Altitude. It doesn’t have forward collision and lane sense. Does have a power lift gate though. Leather seats. Oh and the Bose Audio System. OMG. The wheels as well. Thinking about getting the hood piece (vinyl)

Your local vinyl shop can do the hood decal easily. Had mine done $100 total installed...
