computer updates

Hello everyone. I may have a stupid question, but I am new to the "new Jeep World" and the "new car world" and do not know anything about new car warranty and such, so please forgive. (After all my last car was a1994 Blazer that I bought used). Anyways, my question is this....How do I know or find out if there is a computer update for a 2012 Compass? Do they contact me, or do I need to check with the dealer occasionally? I've been reading about others having these updates done over time and I was curious.
Thanks

Computer Updates

Hi,

I am up in Canada, but I think the policy is the same. I have 2011 Compass and I noticed that the 2012's had additional features/tunings that were computer based.

I don't think they will contact you unless its some sort of safety issue.

I went to my dealer with minor "complaints" that were carefully worded to sound just like the updates that were in the 2012. They checked and found 2 updates and applied them.

For me personally, those updates really helped the performance of the Jeep Compass.

Since you have an 2012, I'm not sure there any new updates, you can ask though. Worst they can say is no.....

G, where did you find a description of the 2012 updates so you could then approach the dealer?

When you go into the dealer with a complaint, the dealer is supposed to check for any applicable service bulletins. This would include any software updates/flashes.

Why would there be a problem in just going in and asking for updates? I honestly asked once and they said "oh we check for those." and shut me down like I was an idiot.

After I read the press info on the CVT updates, I went to the dealer with the carefully worded "complaints" and they applied them.

How can I get those CVT updates to my 2011 Compass? Complain about the cvt? How will I know if they are applied?

Gettings Updates

Hi,

I "lightly" complained at the dealer when in for an oil change. I told the dealer that I was concerned that making left turns was scary as the acceleration was unpredictable.

If you read the CVT enhancements on some websites, you can phrase your "complaints" as safety concerns.

I went to the dealer and tried this, didnt get the update. I will try and different dealer/service center. Is there anything else you can mention to get the CVT update for a 2011? Thanks.

From this link:
Press Release: 2012 Jeep Compass - Blog.AutoShopper.com

I used the idea from this paragraph:
Calibration improvements to the available continuously- variable transmission II (CVT2) provide drivers with better launch acceleration, smoother deceleration when coasting from 25 mph, improved pedal responsiveness and reduced engine revolutions per minute (rpm) when accelerating at mid-throttle.

So what I said to Service Advisor was:
"I'm afraid of making left turns at lights as the acceleration is not consistent, sometimes I have to press the pedal hard and sometimes not"

This seemed to do the trick...

I lost track of what's going on in this thread, so not sure if this service bulletin is applicable:

SERVICE BULLETIN NUMBER: 21-010-11
GROUP: Transmission and
Transfer Case
DATE: October 26, 2011
SUBJECT:
Flash: Driveability and Transmission Performance Improvements
OVERVIEW:
This bulletin involves selectively erasing and reprogramming the Powertrain Control
Module (PCM) and Transmission Control Module (TCM) with new software.
NOTE: Both the PCM and TCM must be reprogrammed for these changes to be
implemented.
MODELS:
2011 (MK) Compass/Patriot
2011 (PM) Caliber
NOTE: This bulletin applies to vehicles equipped with a 2.0L or 2.4L (sales code ECN
or ED3) equipped with an automatic transmission (sales code DAV).
SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
The customer may experience any of the following:
I. Overall improved acceleration and responsiveness to throttle input.
II. Improved highway speed throttle pedal responsiveness and passing acceleration.
III. Reduce engine RPM’s while accelerating at highway speeds.
IV. Deceleration bump felt between speeds of 20 - 25 MPH (32 - 40 KPH).
V. Less throttle pedal effort necessary to maintain a constant highway speed.
VI. RPM hangs (HI RPM) after a normal acceleration followed by the driver reducing the
throttle input.
Updating the PCM and TCM software will correct the conditions listed above.
