What kind of brake fluid?

I have a 2007 Jeep Compass that my son drives. Today I noticed that the brakes were mushy. It is low on brake fluid.

What kind of fluid does the Compass use? DOT 3 or DOT 5?

thanks, Abe

Check your manual. I may be noted on the master cylinder cap if you can read it but the manual indicates what was used.

Low may not be the case depending on various factors. The low mark is still ok if the pads are worn more fluid is in the system. Once new brake pads are installed and the pistons compressed it fills back up the master cylinder. You likely need new pads and the mushy feeling will go away.

If you do fill the master cylinder and brake work is done it will over flow onto components and maybe get on the paint. (brake fluid will remove paint)
