Programming new keys

I want more keys for a 2011 Compass Sport.

I want one with the key fob attached to open the doors and just a plain chipped key.

1) where can I get these keys, other than the dealer?

2) how do I program them? Can I program them myself? Or do I need to have a locksmith hook it to a computer?

3) Do I need a PIN number?

Thanks in advance. Sorry for all the key questions.

0) i am pretty sure this is also a "you can't". i do not think that a normal chipped key has the correct transponder to communicate with your car's computer. it is my understanding that if you have power windows and locks, you must get a key that has them integrated in. i could be wrong, however.

1) EBAY, or an online vender that has dealer access. sorry, its a dealer only part

2) you can't, unless you already have two working keys

3) no, just your VIN number at the...ahem...dealer, and they can pull it up for you.

dealerships aren't evil. go visit one and have your problem taken care of quicky and easily

From the owner's manual, page 18

Quote:
Customer Key Programming
If you have two valid Sentry Keys, you can program
new Sentry Keys to the system by performing the
following procedure:
1. Cut the additional Sentry Key Transponder blank(s)
to match the ignition switch lock cylinder key code.
2. Insert the first valid key into the ignition switch. Turn
the ignition switch to the ON/RUN position for at least
three seconds, but no longer than 15 seconds. Then, turn
the ignition switch to the LOCK position and remove the
first key.
3. Insert the second valid key into the ignition switch.
Turn the ignition switch to the ON/RUN position within
15 seconds. After 10 seconds, a chime will sound. In
addition, the Vehicle Security Light will begin to flash.
Turn the ignition switch to the LOCK position and
remove the second key.
4. Insert a blank Sentry Key into the ignition switch.
Turn the ignition switch to the ON/RUN position within
60 seconds. After 10 seconds, a single chime will sound.
In addition, the Vehicle Security Light will stop flashing.
To indicate that programming is complete, the Vehicle
Security Light will turn on again for three seconds and
then turn off.
The new Sentry Key is programmed. The Remote
Keyless Entry (RKE) transmitter will also be programmed
during this procedure.
This is the answer I've been looking for.

UPDATE:

It worked!

I got a Remote Enrty key and two plain (chipped) keys off the very large auction site for $60 shipped. I got them cut for free at a local locksmith.

I programmed them myself using the method above and they worked!

I saved myself $140.

So, if you don't have spare keys yet, get them now. You need two working keys to do this. Once you lose one, you're at the mercy of people who charge a lot of money.

So true. If only have two keys and you loose one, you cannot program replacement keys yourself. You will have to go to your Jeep dealer and be prepared to probably pay over $150 to purchase and program another key.

You must have two working chip keys to self-program additional keys. You are out of luck if you only have one key. Replacement transponder chip keys are available through the internet.

Just Google "jeep compass transponder chip key" and you will find lots of places to purchase inexpensive replacement keys.

If you want the best quality keys, add the word USA to your Google search. The made in USA keys are better quality. There have been some issues with some of the imported keys.

Now that you have two working keys, it would be a good idea to get at least one more key, in case you lose one. As long as you have two working keys, you can self program up to eight additional keys, and avoid locksmith or dealer programming fees.

Here is a good place to get quality, made in the USA transponder keys for your Compass.

If the locksmith "cloned" the key he had then he won't be able to program a new key. The car will see it as the same key.

I bought a chipped key blank (no remote) for $8 on ebay, for my 2008 Compass.

Took the blank to the hardware store and they cut the key for me for free.
BTW, they said they would have charged $89.00 for the blank chipped key and to cut it.

I programmed the ebay chipped key using the procedures in this thread and it worked fine.

May be time to call good locksmith and my friend works with Coral Springs Locksmith, they are best in key programming, as you have tried everything else. The chip in the new key may/may not be good and you will need equipment to test its signal. The disabling is where the ECU in the car is locked to prevent more keys being added, probably as an anti theft device. The only way to re-enable will be by a diagnostic tool with this ability.

i just bought a 2nd hand 2008 jeep compass and it came with only 1 key. How is the programming going to work if I do not have the 2nd valid key?

Having only 1 working key, you will need to have a dealer (or some locksmiths) program a second key. Get a couple of estimates. Prepare to pay well over $100 for that second key.

After you have 2 working keys, be sure to order at least 1 more, in case you loose one. You can program up to 8 keys yourself, but you must first have 2 working keys.

Yes pin number is needed to reprogram a key. Also Locksmith can program it with less cost as compared to the dealer.
