oil change intervals

Hello everybody in compassland! I have a question about oil change intervals. I guess most car manuals, if not all, say to change your engine oil every 5000 kms. or every 3 months whatever comes first. I just don't understand the 3 mths. part. Suppose you only drive your vehicle say 3000 kms. in 3 mths. How would the oil get dirtier or lose its lubricating abilities by the car or jeep compass sitting idle. The engine is sealed very well. It's like saying oil goes bad or gets dirty sitting in any container. What'd ya think?

I just posted about my first oil change, and I have very low mileage according to the schedule. I have had my Compass 3 mos. yesterday, and I only have 1157 miles on it. First thing, the service schedules we have in our manuals, really don't apply unless we drive in SEVERE conditions. However, I never thought about it like that, so I asked my dealer, and they told me, that even if you don't drive it that often, it is a good chance to run the engine and lubricate those parts. No, oil does not chemically go "bad" so to speak, just sitting there, but you do need to run the engine, warm it up and let it run. From my personal experience, when you let somethig sit idle for that long, everything settles to the bottom, so it becomes necessary to at least run it, whether you drive it or not.

depends on driving habits and whatnot. My subaru was a 6,000km interval.

Many guys will send their oil off to get analyzed to help them determine what is right for them.

Ford recently announced a 7500 mile interval for some of their cars..

I'm still on the 3 month / 5 thousand k interval.. myself.
