2013 Compass MPG/Fuel problem

Hey everyone,

I recently bought my wife a 2013 Jeep Compass Sport with 2WD, 2.4L engine and automatic. She has had no problem driving it around town and loves the car.

Recently she and her mother drove cross country so she could move into our new home. Without even driving for an hour on the highway, she was already out of gas. Instead of getting good gas mileage as advertised, as well as she had gotten in the city, her 9 hour car ride consisted of 4 fill ups. When she went to fill up 1.5 hours into the drive today, she said that her tank would only fill up 10.7 gallons.

Her main problem is the gas mileage being WAY below average, as well as the tank not allowing her to completely fill up.

The reason I ask for your help is because I am currently deployed to Afghanistan and will not be back for another few months. This is our first Jeep and I would really appreciate anyone's insight and help if they have encountered these problems.

Thank you very much and we look forward to hearing back and getting help from other Jeep owners!

-Ian

Fuel tank capacity is 13.6. so if she was getting 22 MPG that would be 286 miles.a tank.It would be good to know how far she drove in the 1-1/2 hours.

I've owned 2 compasses, an 08 FDI Manual 2.4L 4x4 and currently an 11 FDI Auto 2.4L 4x4. For me the key to the most MPGs on the highway is keep the RPMs around 2,000(thats about 63 Mph in the 2011). I average 25-27MPGs during the summer with the 2011 and the 2008 got me 28-29 MPGs in the summer.. In the winter, i get about 22-23MPGs (or temperatures under 50F) with the 2011. You can do some crazy hyper-milling to get those numbers up BUT sometimes it isnt worth the headache.

You cannot burn a tank of gas in 1.5hrs. I just came from my cottage 2-2.5hr drive highway and gauge would drop from full but well above the 3/4 mark. You're missing something. Its in LOW gear or the gauge is not reading right. Dash indicate shoud show the "D" on the dash if its a numbe she is a manual shift mode simulating a standard transmission and the engine must be screeming. I gather she has not driven this before.

She said the tachometer read 220 miles when the tank was empty. There is no manual shift mode on the car. It isn't a luxury model, it basically just has 2wd, the 2.4l w/ automatic cvt transmission and a radio.

It doesn't explain why the gas tank wouldn't fill completely up, when the gauge was reading empty at the station. Would Jeep check to see if her gauges were off?

I haven't seen one yet that did not have the manual shift which is selectable yet. If you rest your hand on the shifter its easy to engage merely by moving it slightly to the left.

Anyway she clearly needs someone to look at it.

Im not surprised, im bringing my 2013 compass back to jeep because im averaging roughly 300km (about 186miles?) per tank of fuel. Absolute joke.

I have tested from empty to full tank 4 times consecutively and that's a rough estimation on how much distance I am getting.

My other car is a modified 5.7lt V8 and that has better fuel economy then my 4cyl compass WTF?! LOL

They are not the best millage in their class IMO. I concider myself luck if I am getting 30mpg (Canadian Gallon or UK which is the same) in the summer. In the winter it drops to about 27mpg as its unable to manage or compensate for the weather of fuel differences.

I have as per my signature Grand Cherokee with 271,000km which is far far heavier, 4.0L engine etc and I can get regualarily 27-28mpg highway. Not that much when you concider how much less a 4x4 the Compass is and size difference. Adds stated 39 0r 40MPG which is frankly a pipe dream.

Reliability and durability is a really big concern for me and I have yet to go a reasonable length of time such as a couple of seasons without some failure.

I your new Jeep cannot be resolved. Call customer service a Chrysler and make sure they are aware of it it (they should give you a case number). Make note of the case number and they arrange for them and the dealer to go over it again together. If they still cannot resolve the issue. You can escalate it to CANVAP which can force them to buy back the vehicle if you like. But don't wait to long although you have to give them the opportunity to address the problem usually at least three attempts at it.

Good luck with it.

Yeah, well they don't offer them here and these small gas engines aren't that great. Why the call it World Engines I am not sure. Maybe they're adapted to all countries. By the time you click past 500km you're running on vapours soon enough praying for a gas station.

The advertising is misleading and the company is not required to prove it can get it. They just come up with a figure and use it I found out. They don't undergo a Government verification to achieve that. So when we're getting 10 less than stated there is little we can do. I won't get caught on that again either but its my last Chrysler product. I started in 1973 with a Plymouth Satellite Wagon. It will end with the Compass.

A tank is never really empty when it hit's Empty and the light comes on. there set that way to give a buffer. Usually once you hit E you have 20-30 miles of fuel left before it actually empty.

That doesn't sound too bad cosidering its a US gallon. Maybe its the consistant warm to hot weather you get the engine likes. I certainly goes up in the peak of the summer but drops like a stone in the winter. There should not be a lot of variation if the fuel management is properly setup and the thermostats maintain optimal engine temp as its suppose to between times of the year.

not to bring an old thread back to life but...

I purchased my 2014 2 months ago and am averaging 23mpg and do apx. 70% of my driving on the highway (lattitude 4x4 2.4l). It's about what I expected but the dissapointing part is the SMALL gas tank. Depending on driving conditions I have to refill around 275-290 miles into each tank of gas. Very bad design from Chrysler... ahem... Jeep

I drive about 600 miles a week and have over 6,000 miles.

Was this "problem" ever verified and fixed.

Last night the gas light came on at 285 miles then I drove another 20 before filling up (Highway 72mph @ apx 2400 rpm). I then put in 12.75 gallons giving me 23.92 MPG.

This is not a complaint on the MPG but the small fuel supply

Side note: On previous vehicles with larger fuel tanks I could safely count 50 miles once the light came on. After driving another 20 miles I was living on the edge.

They were suppose to have improved the millage on the newer years. Being a 2014 I would say that is low and so is the range on the tank. Mention it to the dealer as they can check the computer and O2 sensors are responding correctly while its on warranty.
