Compass 4x4 + snow = :)

Hi everybody. First "big" snowstorm here in Quebec. First time I actually test my 4x4 transmission. I have to say I am really impressed. Even if you accelerate fast, the power is transfered to the rear wheels and there is absolutely no useless spinning. The ESP only flashed once when I was on pure ice. I can't wait for more snowstorms!

I was wondering if there is any maintenance or oil changes for the transfer unit? And I realized that my engine coolant was pretty low. I don't think there is any leaks, I guess it's low since I got it. Can I fill it with any prestone?

Yes, I would think any antifreeze designed for today's cars will work in it. I've had my Compass for 2.5 years now and haven't touch the coolant yet.

I had to say I was impressed driving into Ottawa on Fri. It was the first time I really felt confident passing in the fast lane (85 KM was fast that day). The car gripped well and didn't move around. Winter may not be so bad after all.

Hold on there, I believe it also uses HOAT antifreeze like the other Jeeps and they don't mix. One reason the colour is different. Check you manual and/or check with the dealer parts center.

Ok! I have a bottle of engine coolant at home that says "mix with any color" but I guess I'm gonna go to the dealer.

Once its in you cannot take it out!!! Just like the Multiblend on Quakerstate transmission fluid. Tries to be all things to all trannys. But its not.

Check the owers manual there should be a section on fluids or pickup up the phone.

My jar was down about 2" from full. I took it to the dealer to check it out (still under bumper to bumper warranty). they did a pressure check and whatever else and could find nothing wrong. Then they topped it up. If it goes down again further investigation may be required.

I like to go to the dealer!
73$ to fill the engine coolant and to remove the horn when locking the doors!

Another snowstorm here in Quebec. I had a blast in the woods in virgin snow! That was pretty cool. My tires (Champiro Ice Pro) seems really good and the ESP & 4x4 lock make miracles! The only default of the Compass is surely the ground clearance. Probably gonna buy a lift kit next year.

Ah its a lot higher than a lot of cars. But if you want to plow through deep snow I guess a little more height might help but the under carriage will drag as some point and bring you to a stop.

Without a detail Signature of you vehicle it may be different. However, the 2.4L engine has two thermostats (I don't know how they're designed to control the temperature). The system may have retained fluid within one of these areas and later when the thermostat release fluid back up and out. This off means there may be an air pocket.

I myself notice my coolant down to the add mark the last time I changed the oil at 40k. I had my dealer check it out while in for other items. It was pressure checked etc but no fault found. They topped it up and will keep and eye on it. It was not told this was normal for the engine. However the two thermostat controls may have something to do with this. These engines don't manufacture coolant any more than the manufacture gas for you tank. Would be nice, maybe next Christmas.

I notice that my temp gauge is usually fairly low, well below the half mark and with the temp -3 to -6C area not its barely above the 1/4 mark. I have to have the heat control to max to keep it warm.
