Killer Gas Mileage!!!

Alright everyone I want to bring my findings and show them for everyone to see. Since I've had this compass my goal has been to see what kind of fuel economy I could get! At first I was averaging about 320 miles a tank for city driving with maybe a pass or two on the highway for no more than 5 miles. So I began tweaking my driving, Ie being soft on the throttle, shifting a little earlier especially in the city and braking sooner. But this past weekend I made my 6.5 hour drive from goldsboro NC to knoxville TN just to see how she would do. First before I left I did a few simple modifications. First was removing the cold air tube the ran to the air intake box as warmer air is suppose to contribute to better fuel burn. Next I side gapped the spark plugs and regapped them. The only downside from all of this was the intake was quite a bit louder than usual almost like an sri. Anyways Friday night I topped off the fuel tank, reset my trip monitors and hit the road. Going there I managed to just barley pull off 394 miles on a single tank of gas!!! Again that was from completely full to below E on my fuel gauge!! Needless to say I was excited. But I wanted to make sure it wasn't a fluke. So tonight I repeated the process. Fuel, reset, and go!! I am extremely proud to say that I manage to pull off 400 miles on one tank of gas!!!! Which to my calculations is an average of 29 mpgs!!!! I am beyond stoked!!! My main thing that helped was keeping it below 80 mph and keeping it in 6th on the autostick for as long as I could!!! I am extremely happy with my jeep!!!!

After strictly highway driving, this is with a FDII which gets the worst mileage of all the compass' but I have a K&N intake and catback exhaust.

I have a K&N air filter which I kinda wanna replace, after putting it in my fuel economy went down as much as 2-3 MPG. I have a 14' 2.4L manny and average about 250 miles to the tank. I'm assuming everyone else's tank is 13.5 gallons? I don't drive really aggressive and hammer down the gas a bunch but I don't accelerate like an old man. I would love to have 320 again.... I think I've gotten that a few times only driving highway when I was on a road trip. I keep it about 80 most often and try not to brake as well.

I found that the 2.4L engine drops millage dramatically even with a slight load. EG Wind drag from and empty 6.5ft wide tin open trailer (gutted tent trailer frame). Jeep advertised 39MPG CND on there website but its more like 29MPG CND in the real world. A huge difference. The figure were know to be misleading due to the way its calculated in Canada and without government supervision. The US method was much closer to nominal results if the speed was kept below 100Km/hr for these vehicles the higher speed affects it dramatically as well.

These are not Econo boxes despite the size, weight and engine so if you need number >30MPG you had better look elsewhere.

The 39mpg figure was never for 4x4, it was for the fwd 2.0l.
