Crossmember Extended Warranty

Chrysler will NOT honour the 10 year extended warranty on subframe. I have a 2007 Compass in which the crossmembers (basically the entire underbelly of the car) are prone to EARLY and SEVERE rust/corrosion. Also on the 2007 Patriots. Chrysler refuses to replace them until there is a hole or they fall off. I had to insist that the dealer put it up on the hoist so that I could show him a hole. The rear crossmember is going to rot through any time and could fall off at that point causing an accident and even death. Then they will fix it. It is a waiting game. They won't fix it until it rusts all the way through, but when it does you could be on the highway when falls off! Please share this with as many people as you can; especially anyone owning a 2007 Jeep Compass or Patriot.
I urge anyone else with this problem to consider joining me in pursuing a class action suit.

Hello. My crossmember completely fell off WHILE driving and I was making a turn. My 1 year was in the car and luckily there was no traffic. But let me tell you if there was it would not be a good ending. I had it towed to a mechanic and he was able to take a look at it and he said it was the crossmember and to call a Jeep dealership bc there is a warranty on it. I called 2 near me and both denied it! They said there is no such thing. So I called Jeep corporate and they confirmed there is. I told the lady my problem. The next day I called the dealership again and they took my car in. Dealership "fixed it" but now I'm having so many problems. My accident happened on December 6,2016. I have oil leaks everywhere and now my transmission is slipping. My mechanic says be since the transmission is "factory sealed" he doesn't want to mess with it and now I don't know what to do. I don't want to risk driving it and I have been without a car for at least a month now. I put 500 for the mechanic to fix some oil leak. Now I have another and he says it's 550 for this one. + the trans issue. Idk what to do. They better fix your before you have more issues.

Oh dear that sounds horrendous

I would call corporate again and tell them that this is ridiculous. But how would changing the cross member result in all of that damage? You shouldn't have to pay all of that dealing with a relatively new vehicle.

@JeepCares - do you know what the situation is in Canada? I just learned today that I have the same problem. I called FCA Canada Customer Care and they said the warranty expired on this expired in Dec 2016. Is there any thing I can do so that FCA helps me with this?

My apologies for not responding to you when you first posted. If you would like to, please send me a private message with your VIN, and I will forward it over to the Canadian Customer Care team to see if there is anything further they can do to assist. The warranty was extended to cover the vehicle for 10 years/unlimited mileage.

If you are a reader of the Lemon-Aid books, this sort of thing is called a 'secret warranty'. It really should have been a recall, in which case the company would have at least attempted to contact the owners of the vehicles. Instead they have somewhat grudgingly extended the warranty but didn't go to the effort of letting owners know. And dealers often deny that the warranty exists. I suspect they would prefer that the owner pays for the repairs, plus they can get the warranty money so it's a big pay off for them. Then if you are really unhappy about spending a lot of money on an old vehicle they will be glad to sell you something newer. Sleazy company, sleazy dealers, nothing new there.
Problem now is that the warranty cut off is ten years so 2007 models are no longer being covered. And yes, the warranty criteria is to replace only if a hole exists - although they know perfectly well that the corrosion starts from the inside and the part is already compromised and unsafe by the time a hole breaks through.

I have a 2009 Compass North Edtion. I am in Canada. Also I have same problem with above. The front crossmembers ( some body said it is subframe, front. It is the entire underbelly of the car) are prone to EARLY and SEVERE rust/corrosion. I think this problem is not safty for owner driving. Also I think the car still is in 10 year warranty on subframe. But I am not sure the Chrysler can fix it or not. Because I bought it from used car dealer. We have a 2009 jeep compass. Last year we put a new transmission and wiring harness, about $3500 and now the cross member just cracked. Is any of this under a warranty?

My Jeep Compass 2007 just went to the dealership and the crossmember is totally shot. They told me to call Chrysler Customer Car and I did. According to Chrysler it’s out of warranty and I’m really upset. This is my 2nd Jeep and I’ve never had anything like this happen. Our 96 Jeep Grand Cherokee is still on the road and I never encountered anything like this with it. My compass seems to be truly unsafe and if I don’t spent upwards of a 1000, I can’t drive it. Very upset. Has anyone had any luck getting something like this resolved?

Jeep Issue

I have a 2007 Jeep Compass that has 90k miles on it. My 16 year nephew has been driving this when all of a sudden he is having issues. Come to find out that the cross bars are completely rusted out and not road worthy. AT 90K MILES. Not feeling great that my nephew has been driving this.
Chrysler put an extended warranty out in 2014 for 10 years from the original contract - so basically less than 3 years after they made this extension. Oh but never actually notified the owners- only if the issue happened before the end date.

Now I have no recourse but pay for the repair myself, all because it didn't fully rust before the date. Wish I would have known this before I bought my 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee - wouldn't be loyal to a company that doesn't even inform the owners of these issues.

I'm not an apologist for FCA, but please realize after 10 years, rust shouldn't shock anyone. My Dad had a '69 Dodge he dearly loved, but at about the 10 year point he pulled a hunk of the frame off with his bare hands and decided it was time to retire it. Also, not all Compasses had this problem, only some. I had a 2008 Patriot (AYK a sister vehicle to the first gen Compass like yours) that spent 10 winters in New Hampshire where snow can be a factor from Columbus Day to Mother's Day and the roads are treated with salt & sand, and mine racked up nearly 300,000 miles with no rust.

For you and for any visitors who might be lurking, forums like this are a great place to find out about things FCA won't tell you.
  • A good example is engine oil consumption. There is no recall, but anyone who reads these forums knows the new 2nd generation engines need to be checked very frequently. An added quart here and there can save $$$$.
  • Also, CVT owners know to change the tranny fluid at 50,000 miles and not wait for the interval in the owner's manual, cuz ya might not make it that far. A weak point, yes, and a fairly expensive maintenance item, but you can change the fluid a dozen times for the price of a new tranny.

Finally, the subframe repair may not be outrageously expensive. If your Jeep blew the tranny you'd certainly get it fixed and from what I've seen this repair costs less than that. So talk to a good body shop, maybe they can help. There are some youtube videos on the subject that might be informative. Don't despair!

I was just informed that the X69 Extended Warranty, for my 2008 Compass, expired Dec 3rd. My crossmember broke on the 8th. They will not extend it an additional 5 days. I had no idea this could be a problem and Jeep will not work with me. My Jeep is an extreme safety hazzard to drive, due to the fact the control arm has completely separated from the mount. Estimated repairs are $2,600+. I will never buy a Jeep again. The warranty rep was extremely rude! And Jeep knows this is dangerous, yet 5 days makes it no longer their problem 😞

Welcome to the forum. Too bad you didn't visit this forum earlier, because the rusty subframes have been a discussion topic for awhile now. When I saw posts on the Jeep Patriot website it had the subframe checked on my '08 Patriot. Fortunately, even after 10 New England winters, and well past 250,000 miles, mine was still solid. Not every Patriot/Compass had this problem, and road salt seems to have nothing to do with it.

I agree that for 5 days they oughta do something for you. Then again, they have to draw the line somewhere. Try reaching out to JeepCares on this website. Send them a PM.

You might try another dealer who might fudge, (uh, adjust) the date for you. Back in the 1970s my Volare blew the alternator about a dozen miles after my warranty expired and my dealer said, 'no problem.' Because they did that, they got to sell me another Volare a few years later when I got married.

If FCA won't help, then try an independent shop. They'll probably charge a lot less than a dealer. I've seen some posts where people got their rust fixed for half your quoted price. Shop around. But try JeepCares first.

Yeah I'm in the same position. My wife and son were driving when the back driver upper control arm mount broke from the rusted subframe and the wheel slanted inwards till it was rubbing the wheel well. Of course I didn't find out this was an issue till now and the so called extended warranty ran out the month before I bought it. Since they won't fix it I'm on a mission to get as many partiot, compass, caliber owners with rusted subframes onto the nhtsa and report it so a recall can be forced.

Welcome, ncfisher! Too bad you didn't find our forum sooner. Might have saved you some aggravation. Apparently FCA knows about the rust problem on Compasses, Calibers, and Patriots. After 10 years there's little that can be come. Its getting to be an old car. On the bright side, while expensive, its not as expensive as a new engine or tranny.
