Do low beams shut off when using high beams?

I have a 2016 Compass. Whenever I turn on my high beams, my low beams stay on. Is this supposed to be normal? My fog lights do shut off when I use my high beams though.

Yup, the high beam lights are separate from your low beams so they can both be on at the same time.

If you have standard sealed beams, there is a high beam filament in the low beam bulb which is switched on by the high beam relay. (The low beam relay switches off when the high beams are switched on). It's possible that both hi beam filaments are burnt out in the low beam bulbs, or there is a wiring problem. On the high beam wiring connector, there is a terminal with 2 wires coming off it. One of these wires goes to the high beam filament in the low beam bulb.

Thanks but I figured it out. My Compass has 2 reflectors on each headlight; one for the low beam and one for the high beam, and they both turn on when I use my high beams. I don't have those dual filament bulbs.

Not sure what you mean by two reflectors per headlight. And sealed beams were phased out long ago, the '90s I think. As far as I know the power simply stays on to the low beams when the high beams are illuminated, just to give more light. The fog lights will turn off, if they were on, when the high beams come on.
Also on my Canadian spec 2014 Compass the high beams will come on at low power whenever the headlights are off - they act as the daytime running lights.
