2018 Compass Trailhawk Leak...

Hello -

New member here...Wife just leased a 2018 Jeep Compass Trailhawk. After 115 miles, the Jeep had an odor in the garage. Smelled almost rancid, so I looked and noticed some fluid on the floor about the size a small paper plate. It was oily to the touch, fairly clear and smelled like cat urine.

Any ideas ??

Thanks so much !!!

Sounds like something pissed under your car

I'm trying to think of all the fluids the Compass would have. Oil is yellow->black, coolant is going to be purple and sickly sweet smelling, transmission fluid is red, wiper fluid blue or purple... the closest things are going to be brake fluid and gear oil but you'd know it if brake fluid was leaking. Gear oil is thick, yellowish to start tinging green and gets darker over time, slimy, and it does smell kinda bad up close.

Gear oil is in the power transfer unit and the rear differential. Regular 75W-90 stuff, it would have been fairly difficult to clean up. It would not just rinse away with a garden hose, on un-sealed concrete or asphalt would probably leave an oil stain that only an egregious amount of detergent and hot water could remove. If it cleaned up quickly and easily with paper towels I would say it could't have been gear oil.

So tell us more about what it took to clean it up? And did you crawl underneath and look around with a flashlight to see if there was evidence of any oil or other fluids leaking from anywhere?

I know what it is. Mine did the same thing the day I picked it up. Transmission fluid.
Clear to a light yellow in color. Sulfur smell. Get it back to the dealer ASAP.
No red fluid in these transmission. They are sealed and take a special fluid, Transmission and Transfer case use the same fluid. I have been through this twice. I know and still have the stain on the garage floor I have been trying to clean off.

Looks like its true, these don't use typical red ATF. Some kind of special oil, yellowy-clear like engine oil. So if its watery its probably the transmission fluid/oil, if its thick it could be the Power Transfer Unit or the rear diff. Based on the consistency you reported and the location of the leak almost for sure the transmission oil.

That sucks big time, I can't imagine what could cause a leak so early in its life other than assembly error.

Finally got a call from the dealer. The front differential seal is leaking. It was leaking so bad, that my windshield was covered from following my wife to the dealer.
