First Oil Change

Hi all, I just purchased a 2010 Compass and it just clicked over 2,500 miles. Thinking of doing my oil changes myself. The dealer offers a free first oil change but is about 150 miles round trip. I am considering using full synthetic oil?

Is it worth the gas for the free oil? Unless the dealer is going to do some other work I would do it myself.

oil change

You should definitely use synthetic oil. I however am contemplating using the new G-oil which is a bio (non-petroleum) based oil. Costs almost the same as synthetic available at walmart. But I have proven that synthetic oil is better than regular oil because when I changed the oil in my '94 Dodge Caravan the engine definitely ran better and seems to have more power.

Let my be your mule. Let me use the G-oil first. If something bad happens then at least it did not happen to you. I will be reporting back in about six months about how it performs. With the synthetic that I use (Mobil 1) I change oil only twice a year. Once in winter and once in summer. I will be changing oil in about a couple of weeks and will use G-oil.

According to the manufacturer their G-oil is better than synthetic. If true then I will change oil only once a year but change the filter at least twice a year.

By the way make sure your air filter is cleaned regularly or replaced. More than anything, dirty air is the number one killer of engines. It easily goes into your engine via the airways. With synthetic oil, dirt from combustion deposits is minimized. Its the dirty air.

My '07 Jeep Compass has 117349 miles on it and I just had the cvt oil changed today. $253.85 I tried to observe the procedure. Nothing special.
The mechanic did drop the pan and drain out the old cvt oil. It did not look that dirty to me but at this many miles, probably needed to be changed anyway. He dropped the pan, sprayed some type of cleaner from a can into the workings of the tranny. Let the oil drain out into a drum with a big funnel.
Cleaned the strainer and reassembled the parts. He then used a funnel to install the new oil from a gallon container plus added another quart.
Test drove the car and checked for any leaks.. That's it. No mystery. Car drives fine.

try to use a real APO synthetic oil. Not all synthetics are true synthetics, though the container may say it is.

Amsoil, Redline, and a couple other boutique oils are nice ester based APO synthetics. I use the 5w/20 XL Amsoil or Mobil1 5w/20(if I'm out of amsoil)

The anti-wear additive package is what I pay attention to. Most oils publish their ZDDP ppm (Zinc & Phosphorus) in parts per million. 1300 and above is a pretty good oil IMO.
