My 2016 compass didn't come with a backup camera and I never used the one in previous nissan frontier because visibility was good but hard to judge distance sometimes in the compass. anyway I found a website that makes an aftermarket camera system and they claim no dealer programming needed. It comes with an OBD programming module but from the research I have done this option on the radio has to be turned on by a dealer. I guess the cheapest option is to buy a backup camera with wifi that transmits to your smartphone. I just like the idea of being able to use the display on the radio. any thoughts or advise?
I installed one on my 2014, I assume you have the first gen right?
I searched eBay for a latch handle that had the OEM backup camera and found several. It took me some time to find one that matched my paint color but I got one for $60. I swapped it and then took it to the dealer for an oil change and had them activate it for $40.
The hardest part is removing the rear door panels, after removing a couple torx and some crosshead screws they pry out. The camera connects to the same plug as the license plate lights. I think on the last year models that dont have the camera, the factory harness has the wires ready for it.
There are other options if you dont want to go to a dealer. There is a device by Coastal E Tech called Lockpick. It connects behind the radio harness and enables the rear cam. Only works with aftermarket cameras though.
For ease of install, probably one with wifi, like the one you mentioned, would be best.
Having it display on the radio, all OEM if you can get good prices, I think. If not, a device like Lockpick will work too.
So the camera plugs into the same plug that you disconnected for the license plate lights on your old panel? I want to look at the connection and see if my 2014 compass is prewired for a camera.
Yeah, there’s a plug that feeds the license plate lights and camera. I could tell on mine there were some extra pins on the plug that were not being used on the license plate light side. Those extra are the power and video feed for the camera. I guess, only way to tell for sure is to look at the plug and see if you have extra wires no being used on the plug.
It’s a plug and play if you get the oem latch trim with camera.
Not worth imo unless you wanna dismantle half of the interior along with the hatch to run wires. You might have to drill holes as well. Seems like more of a headache and too time consuming than anything. I bought one then returned it unopened once I read how much work it entailed.
