Considering a Compass.

This is my first forum post. Could anyone let me know their comments regarding the Jeep North vs. the Limited. How big a deal is the Auto/Stick feature on the Limited? I am stuck between the Black and the Jeep Green.
I live in Canada so the 4X4 is a must. I took the Limited for a quick test drive and the Auto/Stick seemed like a nice option but is it worth it?

I look forward to your comments and to my new Jeep Compass in early 2007.

Seemingly everyone here is from Canada

I have the non-Limited model. I guess they called it Sport. For me, I have no use for the AutoStick, the tranny works just fine without it. Frankly I don't want to shift and wouldn't use it. But it's your call.

Welcome to the site!

I have a Limited with the auto-stick. I don't use it, at least not on purpose (it is easy to bump the gear stick into auto-stick mode), so that wasn't a selling point for me..though I think it may be a good thing for resale value. We needed another vehicle ASAP so we bought ours off the lot and there were only 2 choices. The limited one was in the colour I wanted, red, and it had most of the options I wanted plus ones that are considered a luxury item by myself (heated leather seats, sunroof, chrome wheels, etc) while the Sport model on the lot was lacking some of the basics I wanted like 4x4. The fact that there weren't very many Limited models in this province or neighbouring ones helped too. :P

I have the Jeep Green and highly recommend it! As for the Auto/Stick which I also have, I am still in the 'new don't rev too much' phase of my new jeep (less than 2000k so far) but I am liking the feature for lights, and once when I had to speed up quickly. I find it quite 'intellegent' at picking the right gear depending on what you want to do.
For instance, if you 'gear down' while accelerating, it will pick an apropriate gear, while if slowing down, it will pick a different gear for that.

Verdict?

I like it, but could do without if money was the deciding factor.

I'm new to the site as well and am also seriously considering buying a Jeep Compass Limited Edition 4x4 in the next couple months. I'm from Ontario also so 4x4 is a must. I'm going for the Limited Edition over the North for the extra money because of the leather seats and 18 inch alluminum wheels, as well as some other little extras. It really seems worth it and I like the silver painted bumpers better too.

I'm going to test drive it this week, I cant wait!!

If I can get a good price on one, I would definitely choose the Jeep Green!

Check out my review for my thoughts..

http://www.myjeepcompass.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=161

I'm happy with ours. Limited / CVT. Only a couple small things I wasn't happy with.

Welcome to the board.

Thanks! That review was really helpful. I've really looked into this a lot, I also went to the auto show yesterday to see it. I was a little disappointed with all the plastic inside and the "old school" door locks, but I love everything else so I'll have to deal with it.

I have to test drive it to see the power, but I'm not that concerned. Anything will seem powerful since I've been driving my 88 horsepower Mazda Precidia for the past 5 years!! LOL...

The only thing I would really really want is Navigation, but for $3,000 extra, it hardly seems worth it

I'm kind of torn though, with all the options I want, this Jeep comes to about $30,000 CDN whereas I can get a Mitsubishi Outlander for just a bit over that and I love that interior.. I hope I can get a good deal on the Jeep and that will convince me!

The one we ordered came in at 28,750 and I negotiated 27,200.

Limited, 4X4, CVT, 6 disc, boston acoustics, uconnect, full sized spare, convenence and security group.

Opted out of the chrome wheels (personally don't like chrome, and the non ones in my opinion look better) and opted out of the sunroof again, as it isn't my cup of joe - that held the price down like 1,600.

If you want nav, ask if it will delay the deal as I have never seen one with it, I thought it was late availability.

When I checked out the outlander the xls (similar option level) would have worked out to 34k. At 27,200 cdn IMO the compass was a hell of a bargain..

p.s. as stated in my review, I'd not go for the 6 disc changer cause you lose the mp3player jack and to me that is more important than 6 discs.

Thanks so much!!

I don't care for the 6 cd changer anyways, but I do want the upgraded speakers. I think to keep the price down, I will just forget about the navigation

I like the regular rims too, not the chrome ones, but I want the sunroof, driver convenience group, and security group.. then it's reasonably priced. My dad wants me to wait for a used one, but even the demos right now are going for the same price, I might as well get it brand new and know that it's been well taken care of....

I'm gonna go to the dealer on Tuesday... How do you find visibility? When I sat in it at the auto show yesterday, the windshield seems kind of short and the A Pillars are pretty thick :S

front and side visibility is fine.

Rear visibility is not great, however I found that to be the case with most of the other baby utes as well.

HOWEVER.. To me it isn't a big deal as the compass is quite compact. If it were the size of my f250 I'd be concerned but in a vehicle that size, I don't find it to be an issue at all.

I notice limiteds are tough to come by on the lot without the chrome wheels..

If you place and order, I would shoot for invoice + 600 or there abouts. That should give you a similar deal to what I got.

Chrysler has 2 GPS options. One is the In Dash with the 6CD Player and I believe that it the one that you are getting a quote on as it is around $3000.

The second option is the NAVUS On Dash system which is a MOPAR (Chrysler) Aftermarket part and I believe it is around $900.

(All prices are Canadian $ )

Chrysler will be adding a 3rd GPS option soon in some vehicles. I believe that it is called the "My Gig" system.
Not sure if it will be available on the Compass though...

Wow thanks, but the $900 one, is that an add on? You can't get it built with the Jeep, at least I didn't see it on the website or in the brochure... how do you get it?

You buy it from any Chrysler dealer. I'm not sure how much they charge to install it. I don't think that you can get it from the factory.
It's called the NAVUS GPS System and it's made by Garmin which is probably the best GPS maker in the business.
It's a MOPAR part and it's in the Caliber & Compass Brochures.

Here's some more info on it:

Wow you're right, it is in the brochure, I don't know how I missed it. Thanks for the info, I will definitely look into getting it once I actually get my Compass Do you think it might be bad for visibility though since it comes somewhat high off the dash?

I've been wondering that myself. Some people say that it might be better to have it On the dash as you don't have to Look Down to see it - thus taking your eyes off the road. Others think that the In Dash one is better because it doesn't obstruct an of your view. It just sucks that you can't get the In Dash one without getting the 6 Disc CD Player - It sucks even more because once you get the 6 Disc CD Player you Lose the MP3 Input Jack.

BTW: It's only supposed to take the dealer about 30 minutes to install it.

It looks pretty good, but is it mounted there or can u push it down when u don't need it? That would be good if u could, but it doesn't appear that way. Maybe I could just get the portable one then.....
