Blizzaks are a good choice for winter tires. These days there are many winter tires to choose from, what is 'best' mostly depends on what sort of driving you will be doing. My own thought is that performance on ice is very important - you can see snow but ice can surprise you. And I do occasional backroad winter driving where there can be a lot of icy hills.
Neil, I asked about your wheels because 215's are not wide tires and should not rub. So backspace /offset of the wheels could be the reason they rub. 215/70/17's are a tall tire, but, from your pics and description it doesn't seem that height is an issue.
