2010 Compass, Grinding, then lost manual tran oil

I was having trouble driving my 2010 manual transmission compass, meaning that I had trouble getting into 1st and then would hear a "popping" sound. Then the popular whining sound while driving. Yesterday, in Las Vegas, the temps were near 118 degrees and then the Jeep while less than a mile from home sounded like it was grinding on nothing but metal on metal. I pulled into my driveway, and a big puke of oil came onto the ground, and oil under the right driver side of the jeep. It has 74000 miles, and the oil, was a clean, not stinky type oil, almost clear. As a friend of mine says manual transmission fluid leaks usually smell very bad until he said this model uses auto transmission fluid and a plastic plug. My question is, if the plug blew, would refilling the oil and replugging it "fix" the problem or is the transmission, simply based on my description shot? Please help!!!
