Yeah, whenever you buy a used vehicle, you find out why the last owner sold it.
I don't know how many miles on your Compass, but CVTs do seem to be a weak point. I had two. One one choked out at 110,000 miles, another made it to 185,000. The fluid change interval in the owners manual is far too optimistic. CVTs should have the fluid changed every 50,000 miles so if your replacement has the old fluid in it, you're about due for a change.
$1600 was a good price for the used one. I've heard of people paying a lot more. Could you do the work yourself? If not, what did the labor run you?
