Jeep Compass Awarded Top Safety Pick Rating By IIHS

Expected to handle most terrains, one would think the new Jeep Compass is sturdy and safe. Well your assumption may be right because the model has earned a 2017 Top Safety Pick rating from the U.S. Insurance Institute of Highway Safety (IIHS).

As an independent organization, the IIHS has been conducting crash tests for years. Vehicles that earn a ‘good’ rating in five crashworthiness tests - driver-side small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength and head restraints - as well as an advanced or superior rating for front crash prevention will be given a Top Safety Pick award. Those that meet these requirements and also earn an acceptable or good headlight rating will receive a Top Safety Pick + award.

Unfortunately, the 2017 Jeep Compass low beams has inadequate lighting on the right side in straightaways. Its high beams scored even worse as visibility was deemed inadequate on both sides of the road.

On the bright side, it received a ‘good’ rating in every crashworthiness test, meaning general safety is on point. Its rigidity can probably be attributed to Jeep’s generous use of hot-stamped steel and advanced high-strength steel.

Maybe some aftermarket bulbs will help with the vehicle’s light throw if needed.
