New 2018 Jeep Wrangler JL Debuts With 3 Engine Options, Upscale Cabin

The 2018 Jeep Wrangler JL has debuted in Los Angeles with three engine options, two body styles, and a refined, upscale cabin.

The Wranglerís looks have been slightly rounded off and worked over for the JL generation, but itís mostly the same recognizable shape. Jeep fans will be happy to know it stays true to its ancestors with round headlamps, square taillamps, a fold-down windshield, two removable hardtop roofs, a premium soft top roof and removable doors. Itís also much lighter than the Wrangler JK it replaces thanks to the use of aluminum for the doors, hinges, hood, fenders and windshield frame.

Three different engines will be offered this next-generation Wrangler: a 3.6-liter V6, a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder and a 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V6. An eight-speed automatic is standard with the 2.0-liter turbo and 3.0-liter Diesel models, however, 3.6-liter models can be ordered with a six-speed manual or with the automatic.

Sure would like to have that turbo 2.0 in my Compass... "270 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque"

If they can squeeze 270 horse out of their 2.0 with a turbo, what kind of mad power could the 2.4 make with some kind of forced induction?

Someday when we upgrade from this Jeep to our next one we are probably going to try to swing a Grand Cherokee just to get some extra HP and towing capacity. But if they ever offered a souped-up Compass sure would be tempting...

I'm looking hard at a Wrangler again after my '14 Cherokee wears out, or I give it to one of my kids. (it's now 4 years old already! - bought Dec 2013)

I'd wait a year and would only go with the diesel version though.

In my old '04 Wrangler, a tank of gas only made it 200 miles or so. I just cannot live with that.
It's no so much the cost to drive, but I need 300+ mile range on the highway here in Arizona.

The 2.0 Turbo would be ok as long as you got the LIFETIME UNIMITED MILE warranty.
