You are more than welcome. I am glad to hear your dealer is at least aware this is happening. If you do go back in, feel free to send us a PM!

Try turning off your headlights when backing up in a dark environment if this works then a light shield or diffuser on the tag lights may help fix this issue. On our Compass at least the issue is the tag lights are reflecting off the ledge under the tag and back to the camera.

My issue is that if I start driving in the early evening and the dash is bright, the dash will never go dim while driving despite it getting dark out. This becomes an issue for me frequently when doing a 3 hour drive that usually starts at dusk. It will be 10pm, black out, with bright dash in my face. If I turn the car on at night, dash dims normally. Thats why i feel like this is a software and not a sensor issue. I know my car is capable of sensing dark...Driving early morning, i also have no issue of the dash going from dim to bright while driving.
Ive had the update done (despite not being part of recall) and even had some "field testing" but all they did is turn the car on at night and during day (which was never an issue). Im having a hard time getting them to understand what i explained above...
One other situation i can mess up the dash: if i turn on the car at night so dash is properly dim, but then use the scroll wheel to turn on the overhead lights for >10 seconds, dash goes bright and will stay like that even after turning off overheads. I can also mess it up by opening a door while car is on at night (like dropping off a passenger)

Anyone else?

ImLost I just bought my car and they said they did a reflash for this before I drove it off the lot. I watched them pull it into service. I think everything is working right.

deb1262 Had the recall done today. I don't drive very often at night so let's hope. I did notice that when hubby called, his special ringtone played through the speakers where it never did that before. It was just a general tone for all calls.

copcarguy Well the dimmer switch got its first "real world" test last night as my wife is back in the hospital in NY unfortunately.

I drove the Jeep about 250 miles yesterday going back and forth between home in PA and the hospital in NY.

For the first time the dash lights did not cause me additional stress.

In fact I totally forgot about them until I stopped for fuel and was nervous the bright gas station lights would mess them up.

Then about 5 or 6 seconds later it went dimmer and the dimmer switch worked. So at least on my particular vehicle it will respond about 5 or 6 seconds later and work correctly. I tested it 4 or 5 times and each time it worked a few seconds later.

I was hoping the back-up camera would also apply to the dimmer switch telling the rest of the dashboard to be dimmer but no dice, shifting into reverse sends the screen into retina-searing full on mode.

Maybe this should be the next recall??

I'd also like to send out another "Thank You" to Kori for helping me get my Jeep in for the recall.
Im glad to see that Chrysler at least fixed the dimmer issue for you in this recall. Im still bummed that they haven't addressed the reverse cam in super bright mode. I agree, lets make this the next recall!

copcarguy Thanks to Kori I got my appointment back today. They had the Jeep inside for roughly half an hour. Not sure if it's fixed yet as it's not dark out yet.

I'll report back in a few hours...

kuba Still having issues after the update. Apparently mine went through testing after the update, however the only testing they did is turn on the car at night, dash dimmed, then turn on the car during day, dash bright...Test passed... Turning the car on at night was always the work around for me to get the dash to properly dim. It is when I open a door, turn on cabin lights, etc which causes the dash to go stuck in bright mode. The case today: I dropped some people off at the airport, so I was under a bright overhang. I also open my door to help with luggage. I'm not sure if it was the temporarily bright environment or if it was me opening my door that glitched the system. Never shut off my car as this was a quick drop off.
Regardless, I got to drive in violation of federal safety regulations on the icy roads this morning...

copcarguy Hello Kori, I sent you a PM as I definitely need your help with an appointment. I made an appointment for the 28th which they confirmed but later cancelled, and now are saying their first available is 1/11.

I'm hoping a nudge from you will get my appointment back.

Thanks!

dawm Had mine done, dimmer works now. I already had it into the dealer for the fix and got the recall letter in the mail just the other day. No issues having them update the IPC.

I think some dealerships (not all) are not good in taking this message down through the chain-of-command to the lower echelon employees. You might have simply met with a service advisor who hasn't been informed of the service bulletin. I'd suggest that you print the specific recall concerning the dimmer function not working and speak with the service manager directly, with the print-out in hand.
12-16-2017 11:03 AM
NorthCoastie19 So in addition to about 6 other problems, I am having the dimming issue as well. I brought it up to the service dept when I took the vehicle in for the other issues (3rd trip to dealership in 2 months for same problems) and specifically mentioned reading about the dimming problem on this forum. I was told there is “nothing out there from FCA” about the dimming problem. Didn’t I just read that there’s a recall? Not trusting my dealership at this point.

Hey I haven't find a solution to it yet. There's a recall for software update which I have high hoped for. I found a lot of issues with my TrailHawk and I hope they get fixed with that new update. Other that the dimmer and the surround feature, my outside temp sensor is not accurate until the car warms up which messes up the heated seat, wheel and heat feature on a cold start, the forward collision setting keeps going to "medium" on every START no matter what I set it to, the navigation automatically goes to volume 15 on every START no matter what I set it to and the mpg is not even close to what was supposed to be. That's pretty much it from the top of my head. I got videos on everything cause FCA is trying to convince me that I'm crazy.
I received the recall letter for the update so let's see what that'll fix cause I really like the car but it's annoying me every time I thing about all those things.

N22Tango Dealership called and said to bring my Compass in, which I did yesterday. An hour later I was driving away and I tested the rotary dimmer last night and "glory be"... no more flamethrower-bright illumination coming from the speedometer and center display.

The only thing though, I wish the back up camera would/could be dimmed as well, like I can do in my GM pickup and Chevrolet Volt.

Guvnor64 I received my recall notice in the mail yesterday. Called the dealer and set up an appointment to have the vehicle fixed.

1. The Navigation and speed limit volume always defaults on 15. No matter how I lower it or raise it, every time I start the car it sounds at volume 15 even though the display shows the number I put in.
2. This morning the outside temp was around 70F and the display was showing 90F.
3. In the sound settings, I some times get the "surround" option and some times I don't.
4. The phone pop ups on the cluster don't do anything noatter how many times I selected, diselected that feature. I get all the pop-ups on the UConnect screen thought.
5. Also today I noticed that at times while I was fully stopped and I had my transmission on the manual position, I couldn't shift down to 1st gear. It'll show 1 on the cluster for a second and then go straight to 2 or 3.

They gotta put their **** together cause this is becoming annoying.

SouthernLights I bought an ‘18 Compass last week and it had the instrument panel dimming issue. The dealer called this week and said there was a recall on the vehicle and it should take 20 minutes or so to flash the computer. I got there and it was the T70 update to correct the dimming issue. It took over 4 hours, but it worked! Not sure if that’s how long it should take for the update or if they were just having issues with it. So nice to be able to dim the dash lights like you’re supposed to be able to!

Some Compasses were built with “old” previous version software...after the 1st NHTSA complaint, Oct 12, they had to ID which vehicles were involved....many were built correctly with the most current software.....

So as I entered the VIN of my 2018 Compass Trailhawk (with what I assume is the larger screen) it shows that the recall date was established November 21.

In this day and age when you can order a side of beef from Amazon and it shows up 2 days later, I wonder why Jeep didn't press a button somewhere to advise their dealerships on November 21 that approximately 25,800 model-year 2017-18 Jeep Compass SUVs were having safety issues in regard to the "flamethrower" panel lights? Pardon my pun, but my dealership is still "in the dark" about this issue.

I suggest that until that magical day next year when Jeep dealerships start making this fix for this, some Compass owners might want a temporary fix for this and here is what I'm doing... There is a pilot shop on the internet were you can find a thin, self adhering piece of film called a "moveable sun visor". I have one I kept in my airplane and pilots use these on occasions when they are flying in the direction of a rising or setting sun. Tonight (after reading it will be a cold day in "January" 201 before we can even begin thinking of having this problem fixed, I installed my "moveable sun visor" on my speedometer cluster. It did a great job of cutting down on the intensive illumination and then I applied it to the center display and it works great there to cut down on (I want to say "radiation") but that intensive illumination as well.

The moveable sun visor simply adheres to plastic surface with a static charge. You don't need to add a static charge to it. My experiment tonight showed it adheres as well to my Jeep interior sources as well as the inside of a windshield or side window on an airplane. I'll try and share a picture later.

These are relatively inexpensive, about $10 and you can find them through any good pilot shop online. Since I am new here, I am not allowed to post a link to any website but I am happy to provide a source if you PM me. Or, just do a Google search for "moveable sun visor" and maybe add the word aircraft or pilot and you'll find the source.

This might be the best fix for now, until you can get the real software fix from your dealership. My "moveable sun visor" also works well for the backup camera at night.
They probably started to work on a fix in November after being notified of the issue. Which is where that date came from.

Reagan39 N22Tango,
The dealerships were notified yesterday. The software update is available at every dealer. It was probably there all along since the problem vehicles were built with previous versions. This must be the “fog” of recall?
Good luck

This is not an official FCA source. As I stated above, the recall was released earlier this week. If you have the recall on your vehicle, you will receive a hard copy of the recall notice within the next week or so, but you can go immediately to recalls.mopar.com to check the status. If for some reason your dealership seems to be having trouble accessing the software for the recall, they should be reaching out themselves for assistance, but you are welcome to send me a private message with your VIN and the dealership so I can follow up with them.

I hope JeepCares could clarify this. I read the article and it implies January but Kori was offering to help with appointments already.
I have to believe the dealers have the update available. I have an appointment with my dealer for next Tues, the 12th which I made online citing the FCA RECALL T70.
Well, hopefully JeepCares can confirm the update availability.
UPDATE: I called the FCA RECALL ASSISTANCE CENTER (1-800-853-1403) & they called my dealer & confirmed the software update availability.
