It's the last of Daimler-Benz factory engine options, before Fiat jumped in. It's OM651.925 bi-turbo diesel.
Check my sig for the reference hyperlinks.

I'm in the Uk and have one, the 163bhp, what did you manage to tune yours up to in the end and how reliable was it?

I realise its an old thread, but even more reason to ask how reliable has it been after a few years?

Hey. Canadians have them too I think.

Anyways, it's all good here 50k km after except aramid fiber based yellowstuff EBC front brake pads are almost gone now, actually waiting to do replacements this week. That was the option I went for, having small but still somewhat heavy and obviously overpowered diesel Jeep brings you at the necessity of strong stoppage power too and some extra stability (Got my full German TV certificate for those 235/55R17 on 8" wide rims this February, really proud of it - firstly they just refused to do any testing outside of tech specs but I insisted, I've done a cool calculation). Yellowstuff - they are soft on rotors but wear off quicker, I personally don't mind that combination. It's more fun to drive, you just need to warn other passengers to be prepared for that kind of braking. Basically it's a small racing Jeep, honestly had no problems on (German no-speed-limits) highways overtaking any average Porsche SUVs, Audis up to Q5 or BMWs up to X5, yet always felt superb on snow or ice and off course any off-road mountain trails here in Germany. Maneuverability excels while consumption is around 6.5L/100km, precisely what I wanted and what I'm explaining to others why I bought this for many not so visually attractive or outdated model.

I mean, if you go with the chip on 163bhp you just *must* consider other related tunings as well. Must!

Reliability, I keep the chip jumpers on optimum, not on the plus side (more HP/Nm) not on the minus (fuel save) just in the middle, several times done full ECU reset each time relearn was smooth. There's less turbo lag, less fuel consumption out of highway, more responsiveness on highways.. Actually I had more issues with LED turn signal bulb than with the CRD chip, electronics-wise.

chipping the 2.2 CRD

I was browsing what are the options for installing performance chip in diesel Compass? Maybe anyone here with ECU tuning experience and suggestions?
Some say it's a waste of time/money and that air filter/exhaust upgrade are much better and safer way, but some do claim magnificent improvement.
Of course I'd like to see better turbo, torque, fuel optimization...

Diesel 2.2 is Daimler-Benz OM651, even Brabus is offering their performance kit ant they definitely are not unknown modders.

Brabus - Tuning for Mercedes-Benz
