BeDevil79 So after looking around I realized the best thing to do is buy <1yr used/demo next time, as prices are much better (I did this before with 3 of my previous vehicles) and if we stay in Canada my list goes in this order:

1- 12 Range Rover Evoque
2- 11/12 Ford Edge Sport
3- 11/12 Ford Explorer Ltd/Sport
4- 12 Jeep Grand Cherokee Altitude

Got to get residency first though and decide if we're moving west (Toronto or Vancouver) so for now I'll be looking at my list of mods/accessories...

tbsoundarts Yea if only the pockets were deep enough for a raptor lol.

Ridgelines are nice. Love the truck bed design just have a hard time getting over those side pillar things

BeDevil79 I think if I had a good enough reason to buy a pickup it would have to be an F150 Raptor, awesome machine!

Or else for a regular truck I'd go for a Honda Ridgeline

1: Vw Tiquan
2: Vw Jetta Tdi Sportwagen
3: Vw Beetle
4: Audi Q5
5: Subaru Forester
6: Fiat 500
7: Dodge Challenger

BeDevil79 Thanks, good list, similar to mine...

It will be interesting to see what the Patriot/Compass replacement looks like but I'm pretty sure it'll still be too small

For me I want something thats more up to date on the inside, like the Edge - Jeeps are so dated inside

2011compass Good thread BeDevil.. Well, i am finally starting to get comfortable in my compass, but in a few years, i will surely be replacing it with an upgraded vehicle. Here is the list.
2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee, Ford Escape or Edge, Chevy Trailblazer.

That Range Rover Evoque is one fine ride. Just not practical for me

Mazda speed 3 isn't a bad car, just ugly. I had a Mazdaspeed protege back in the day and then I traded that in for 2008 Honda Civic SI. The mustang is really the best bang for buck. Its funny because I now look at rice burners in a much different way. The VW GTIs, Civic SIs, Mini Cooper S are all slower (much slower) than the Mustang.

Donfd @BeDevil79:
X3 is really awesome. Looked at one while my X1 was in for service. The 20d engine is the perfect compromise between performance and economy IMO. BM also have really slick gear boxes. BM's also appear to be bullet proof as I know many people with older, high mileage BM's that are still going. Just avoid the sport seats (really uncomfortable) and suspension. Only prob with BM is the run flat tyres - really expensive here in SA. Depending on the finances in the future I would also look at the X3 as my next car (though Landy much better value).

Never owned a Merc so can't comment on that. I know in SA service is really expensive once out of motor plan.

Have you thought of an Audi Q5? I've driven the 3.0 diesel a few times (mate has one). Really brilliant car. Actually looked for one when I bought the X1 but second hand ones are hard to find in SA - the guys that buy them hold on to them. Only prob is they need big wheels to look good - minimum 19".

tbsoundarts had a 2010 mazda speed 3 :O

white with black rims of course lol

BeDevil79 Thanks for keeping the thread going guys.... Mention of the Mustang got me thinking of workable sports cars with our little boy, so went to look for used Audi TT's tonight - but although awesome they're just way too small as a primary car.

So now I'm looking around at other used cars instead of new - thinking an X3 or Merc GLK would be a good option down the line, any experience with either of those anyone?
03-12-2012 06:07 PM
Donfd My last 2 cars were both diesel - Audi A3 and BMW X1. Loved the X1 - fast, handled well and economical. Would probably go for that again if possible. Otherwise Landrover Freelander 2 HSE spec. If Jeep brought the Compass diesel to South Africa with a normal 6 speed auto would love that.

Been driving the wife's Mini Cooper Cabriolet last few days - no other car puts a smile on my face like that. Only problem is that it's not practical - gym bag, laptop and lunch fills the boot.

giantsnation Realistically if I didn't have to worry about snow and kids, I would have gotten a 2011/2012 Mustang. Almost the same price as the compass and a ton of power (300hps with 19/29 mpg) with decent gas mileage. HOWEVER, RWD coupes just were not going to work for me.

Old cars / New cars

I read Carscoop most days and seeing the new vehicles at the Geneva show got me thinking what would I drive if not the Compass?

In the UK my car history has always been fwd hatchbacks:

87 Renault 5
89 Ford Escort
92 Vauxhall Astra
99 Ford Focus
03 Ford Focus
03 Fiat Stilo (diesel)
08 Fiat Bravo (diesel)

When we moved to Montreal we went for an 09 Jeep Patriot then the 11 Compass, if we replace it here it will likely be for a Ford Edge, Ford Explorer or Jeep Grand Cherokee.

If we were in the UK still though (or go back) I think I'd go for a Citroen DS3 R or DS4 Racing or Nissan Juke Nismo. My fiancée would either have a Peugeot RC-Z or Merc SLK - although I think if I could afford in either place I'd want a Range Rover Evoque!!!! All these are so much more modern looking....

What would you swap the Compass for if not a Jeep? (realistic not dream car - Lamborghini or Lotus for me)
