Engine is struggling to climb hills

Does anyone ever have a problem with their compass climbing hills? My 2008 Compass 2.0L seems to be having a hard time climbing hill. From cruising speed of 60mph entering a slope hill climb, the engine would rev down to 40mph slowly.. and if I want it to go back up to 50mph or even 60mph, I can feel the engine struggling and reving up to reach that point!

Is this normal?

This has been happening since 2010 and it wasn't until April 2012 on a hill climb in Utah that it started to light up the transmission-overheating indicator. I followed the recommended manual to sit tight and let it cool and everything else went back to normal.

I'm just curious as to what is wrong with the transmission.

Thanks.

You have passed the useful life of your trans fluid, time for some maintenance. Keep the new level as low as possible.

Is the transmission fluid change something you can do it yourself, or does it requires the dealership? Any specifics would be helpful as I'm planning to check out the local shops here about it! Thanks.
