Compass 07' Won't shift from Park.

So yesterday I went out of town on a thirty minute drive and didn't do much but open and close the back hatch a bit. Then came back home parked for a couple hours. I went back about five hours later to find out that I could not shift out of Park. I read as much information as I could online about this problem and found the white shift switch (on the right side of the shift console) that is suppose to work when the brake is pressed doesn't anymore. So now to shift I have to flip the switch manually to get out of park.... but my brake lights do not work at all. Which makes driving a bit hard. The running lights and reverse lights work just fine though.

Has anyone ever dealt with this issue? I had the same problem a year back but the shifter worked after I played around a little with it .... but now seems to be a lot worse.

Well, for any of you that ever have this problem .... the problem was the brake switch and needed to be changed. It was about $100 fix so no big deal. And once again the bypass is located on the right side of the console under a quarter size cover that you can pop out with a key or flathead. (2007 Jeep Compass)
