gascap light

So. Driving to work today and my gascap light comes on. I pull over and check my cap. Its on correctly, and tight. I turn my jeep off to see if it resets. It does not. So i start driving to the gas station and eventually it just goes off. Anybody know whats up!?

A slight leak in the cap will trigger it. It great Jeep put that on the dash. 99% the time other vehicles just give the check engine light which could be one of dozens off faults. Once the gas cap leak is no longer detected the fault code and dash indicator clears automatically. Sometime opening and closing it reseals it better. Since its a ratching action its impossible to tighten it too much which could be a reason as well.

Bottom line there is nothing to be concerned about.

PS: For future refence you should add the Year, Model, & specifics in your signature as it is required for most analysis.

This was taken from the 2013 Compass Owner Manual (available here):

gASCAP
If the vehicle diagnostic system determines that the fuel
filler cap is loose, improperly installed, or damaged, a
“gASCAP” message will display in the odometer display
area. Tighten the fuel filler cap properly and press the
TRIP ODOMETER button to turn off the message. If the
problem continues, the message will appear the next time
the vehicle is started.
A loose, improperly installed, or damaged fuel filler cap
may also turn on the Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL).

My 2010 compass had the gascap message in the odometer this mornig after having the ECU changed yesterday. Checked the gas cap and seems to be ok. O-ring seems a little dry to my taste but seems to be working fine. Any thouhts on this issue beside a faulty cap?

Gas cap fault light would usually mean gas cap, but car EVAP systems have a lot of areas that can leak. A cel pointing to an evap leak would pop up usually if it were anything other than the cap. I hope it is your cap since that’s the easiest and one of the cheaper fixes.

My last cap code on a 05’ VW Jetta was indeed the cap but there was also an evap related code along with it that was fixed by replacing a stuck purge valve solenoid near the fuel rail. Replacing the cap got rid of the cap light, but the evap code stayed till I found the bad solenoid.

Good day,

I have a Jeep Compass 2008. The gascap light came on. I changed it and the light is still on. Can this light to be related to other things or not? I went to the mechanic and he says is the gas cap. what should I do. What's the best brand to buy? Or what can I do considering I already changed 1 time.

Thanks a lot in advance

gas cap dash light

I had that on my Jeep Patriot. After i gassed up I tried all the things people said and at 50 miles, (that is 4 days driving, i work close to home) it wouldn't go off. Today i was frustrated and tried something and it worked.
On the dash i pushed the button that shows how many miles left till i gas up. I pushed it and held it for 10 seconds. The light went off. So .... give it a try.
