2012 Compass cabin heaters playing up

Hi folks, on my way into work on Friday I spent the whole journey breathing mist as it was rather cold and my heaters decided not to work!
I have read a lot of different ideas on the internet from blend doors to burping the engine to catastrophic seals going and dead engines!
I am just wondering if anyone else has had a similar experience to mine:
Firstly it takes an age for the car to warm up, usually about 7 miles before I get any warmth in the cab, then this on Friday morning - no heat whatsoever, then on my way home in the evening I had some heat but only warm enough to notice that the heaters were working! And lastly, this one I found very odd, whilst sitting in traffic a few weeks ago, the engine temp dropped from halfway up the gauge (its usual position) to just below half way and the fans went cold, when we got moving again it all went back to normal!
The car is a 2012 2.2 CRD Sport+ Compass.
Any help would be gratefully received thanks

the very slow engine warm up and cooling off at idle suggest a failed thermostat.
