2012 Jeep Compass CVT Transmission Overheats and Whines

Seems this is an ongoing problem.

I have also found others with the same problems on youtube. The transmission overheats, and makes a whining noise, and then slows down to 40 MPH, until it cools down. The dealership finds no codes, and it will not do it for them. They need to drive it uphill, or for like an hour to get it to do this. How can I get them to fix this, and does anyone know the main number who I can call to get this handled?

I have been searching the web and talking to local shops for the better part of this year trying to find help on this issue. It plagues a number of Chrysler, Nissan and Mitsubishi vehicles that use the JATCO JF011E.

I too, wish to put out a call for help.

If you are out of warranty you likely scr....ed. Unless you reported it during the powertrain period. Other than firmware update (of which there were many) there is little they can do since the CVT is a non serviceable part. Replace only. Fluid change is around 150k-200k km. the owners manual will indicate when or just call the dealers service department for that.

You could take it to a more accommodating dealer and/or report the problem directly to customer relations and they should open as case and consult with a dealer of choice on testing it. Testing does not mean looking for codes. There is far far more they can do!!! I have been there and done that 3 times at least.

same problem

Hi! I had the same problem with my 2007 Jeep Compass Limited. They replaced the cooling element on the side of my CVT transmission. That seemed to fix it. Only the dealership will do it though, and it was $1200.

Not sure....

I have a 2007 Compass, it has less than 40,000 miles. It was my sons car, now my daughter has it, it has been used pretty much for short trips, to school and around town. I am noticing what others are saying here regarding a noisy/ whiny automatic trans. The other thing I notice when I drive it, it does not seem to coast very well at all. My daughter wants to make a 2 1/2 hour trip in a couple of weeks, but I'm not sure I want her on the interstate reading what some are saying here. The trans has not overheated, and gone to safety mode yet. Are my symptom in line with what others seem to be experiencing?

CVT don't coast at all as they always engaged except when you come to a stop. Its the nature of the CVT transmission.

As for the noises I am not certain of yours as you're relating to others. Normally they don't overheat at all. Something would have to be wrong not confusing engine temperature as related on your dash gauge which has nothing to do with the transmission. More likely any noises you hear if so are from the alternator. There have been numerous failures especially in the 2007 years with the ADP (pully device on the end of it). Its an expensive repair because a lot of labour is involved to get at it. Jeep put it in the worst possible location if you look. Have a local independent shop do the job if you're not into it yourself. Pickup a unit from a rebuilder for replacement and it will save you very big money.

You may have to take it on a drive (highway yourself for a good hour) to see how it drives which is the only way to know. Oil change/filter is a must at regular intervals is the life blood of the engine. I'd get it done regardless since short drives is the hardest on the engine oil as well as everything else. If a dealer does the oil change they normally also do an inspection while its up for front end wear (also a big wear problem for it) etc.

Stay away from quick lub shops period.

Thanks for the info...Oil changes are done regularly, I take care of the maintenance on it, I'll give it a good drive and take a closer look in to the pulley. Sometimes reading on the forums will build more fear than help. Just read about others in this thread with overheating whining. Thank you for the reply.

FYI

The CVT has a fluid cooler located at the bottom behind the rad. Typically it will be clear and clean from debris with the AC condenser and rad in front of it.

In my opinion this world engine requires frequent quality oil changes and if towing and or a lot of hot weather/very cold winter. Run a good name brand synthetic oil EG Quaker State, Penzoil etc for me its a must in the winter time.

2012 Jeep Compass Transmission Overheats, Whining Noise, Slow Accelaration

I have always wanted a Jeep. A couple of months ago, I purchased a 2012 Jeep Compass from a certified pre-owned dealer. I hate I ever wished for one. About 2 weeks after I purchased it, the check engine light comes on and I take to Autozone to use their diagnostic reader and code reads the electronic throttle control... which made sense because the ETC indicator light would came on periodically. I called my dealership and they had it sent to their warranty mom and pop repair shop (not a certified Jeep repair). The repair shop said they found nothing wrong with the vehicle and that a hose was just loose. So a few days ago I was taking my daughter back to the university, 211 miles away. First time I have put the Jeep on the highway since purchasing it 6 weeks ago. After driving 1.5 hours, about 75 mph, the high transmission temperature warning light came on, the engine speed was reduced and it made a high pitch whining sound. I had to cruise to the nearest exit and sit the car in neutral for about 7 minutes like the manual said. On the way back, the next day, it was night time, storming and a lot cooler. The light did not come on but every since the Jeep struggles to accelerate pass 65 mph. I contacted Chrysler (1-800-334-9200 Complaint number 29944051) and they told me there was no reported issues with Jeep Compass' transmissions overheating, yet I see several complaints on this forum and YouTube. Has anyone had this issued repair and what was the outcome? The vehicle had high usage and mileage when I purchased it... it was previously a rental car and had 109000 miles (silly me, thinking well if it was only owned by a rental car company, then I pretty sure they kept up on any maintenance issues). I have bought rented vehicles. However, they are typically sold with very low millage as well as approx. 2 years warranty still on them. They pretty all rent current year models. Hence you or the buyer has the comfort of knowing any issues will be covered other than electronics and options all of which should be still working include AC. A in depth check of all these just needs to be done.

Yes, there are many reported CVT issues. However, Chrysler would never admit there is a trend. There may be a TSB for dealer to get right to the fault to fix it. But certainly not a widespread problem. At that millage the CVT service is due which may correct the issue for you. (supposedly fluid and filter change, but you can ask your dealer what is done).

If you just got it the dealer should fix pre existing problems such as this. The certified dealer mentioned doesn't sound like a Chrysler dealer. There are protection laws but acting fast is key and check with those who know what to do. Waiting with end up with you paying the full bill.

PS: The Compass was built on a car platform with the same powertrain as the Caliber. You're is the 2nd generation where a lot of body appearance took place also engine model and transmission was slightly different I believe. But the Cherokee and Grand Cherokee are the true Jeep products

My 2009 Jeep Compass started having a similar problem yesterday. My wife was driving for about 20 minutes when she came to a stop sign, stepped on the gas to continue but nothing happened. She turned the car off and restarted and continued again normally until the next stop. With the gas pedal all the way to the floor the RPM would not go over 2k. Again, she turned off and started again. She called me and I went to help. I experienced the same problem until I got made it to a garage. They checked the error codes and found one related to the transmission but they do not work on transmissions so all they did was read the error codes for $120.00. By the time I did get to this garage the car was making a high pitched whining sound which sounded like it was coming from the automatic transmission. The car is still at that garage and am wondering how to proceed. Transmission specialist shop? Dealership?

Phone around and find a transmission shop who works on or with CVT. Few repair them other than some external accessible parts. They are extremely expensive and friends recently buying new(newer) vehicles I have advised to stay away from anything with a CVT. Dealer fluid service can be up to $500 as I found out calling to get ours done. Gave ours to my daughter and moved away from CVT and 4 cylinder engines.

A dealer replacement would exceed the value of that vehicle. You have no signature of details and no history here either as you would know they are not reliable. Jeep dropped the CVT after years using it. Others have picked up using them.

That sounds like the transmission is overheating. The limit on RPM is the control logic holding the engine back due to high trans temp, and the whining noise is likely the transmission's fluid pump cavitating due to the hot fluid.
If you haven't already, the first step is a fluid and filter change. Secondly, a 2009 would likley still have only the internal fluid cooler, which transfers heat to the engine coolant and ultimately to the engine radiator. So any issues with the engine's cooling system can affect the transmission cooling.

2009 Transmission Problem

My wife was driving to work and noticed reduced power when trying to accelerate. She stopped at a stop sign and the car would not move. She called me and I met up with her. I tried and that although the car would move it was very slow to do so. I drove it slowly until I came to a stop sign. At the stop sign the car would not move. I turned the car off and waited about 1 minute. I turned the car on and the car drove but with reduced power until the next stop. Finally as I was driving the transmission did nothing and was dead in the water. No drive or reverse but a noisy whiny and clanking sound before it broke down.
I towed it to Mister Transmission and they rebuilt the transmission. The problem was a bearing that broke and started to permeate the transmission breaking anything that it came in contact with. The mechanics opinion was the bearing is too small to begin with from the manufacturer and therefore gets overworked and gets stressed and breaks. He has seen it before so he replaced it with a larger bearing.
Finally, after all is said and done not to mention the stress and safety issues it cost me $4400.00 CDN excluding towing costs.

Thanks for your response. I towed it to a transmission shop and they rebuilt the transmission due to a blown bearing which destroyed the rest of the innards. Cost me $4400.00 CDN. Mechanic told me it is due to the bearing used in manufacturing being as small as possible to pass any tests for cost reduction. The bearing is not robust enough and is overworked but robust enough to get it past the warranty period. He repaired using the most robust bearing.

I hope this helps all other Jeep Compass owners.

P.S. While in the transmission shop they pointed out that the cross-members were severely corroded and should be replaced. He took the time to call Jeep dealership to inquire and found that all Jeep Compass and Patriots 2009 or after are replaced under warranty if you know about it. Call your dealer and refer to Policy X69 to replace rusted out cross-members. I have 2 Jeeps so this really helped me.

I took my Jeep 2009 Compass to a transmission shop by tow truck. A bearing broke inside the transmission and had to be rebuilt for $4400.00 Canadian. The transmission guy explained that the bearings they use on these Jeeps are the cheapest that can be used and he sees it quite often on Jeeps. He replaced with a higher rated bearing.
