Engine noise

Is it me or the engine is quite noisy with cold temperature? It's like a knocking noise. Even if the engine is hot, the noise is still there. Is it the VVT?

Variable valve timing.
I know that most engines are louder but my mazda3 was getting normal when it was hot.

I've noticed that louder engine noise when the weather is colder. My car sits outside overnight at work. I have a short freeway drive exiting from work, and I notice the louder engine noise at highway speeds. The vehicle probably isn't warmed up at that point. The rest of the drive home is on city streets, and I don't know that I hear the noise then. Not sure if it's speed related,or if the engine hasn't warmed up.

Maybe pistol slap, but that usually goes away after the block heats up. I had that on a Mazda MPV, poor engineering, the piston was too small.
