2010 Compass Wants to pop out of first, whining sound in drive

Today, I was driving, and attempting to put my Jeep in first, and it kept trying to pop back out, and was giving me several problems. I got it on to the freeway and it sounded horrible, making a whining sound, one that I have not heard before. Is this the transmission? The fluid gone? I'm not sure how to check the manual trans fluid. HELP!!

Check you owner manual. All fluid check are in there.
I say to get it to a mechanic not drive it at least in 1st. You should be able to pull away in 2nd in most situations. Driving it like that maybe tearing up the gears.

It would be very wet with the fluid if there was a major leak odds are it is/was a linkage problem. Assuming the gears within are not damaged now.

Did you figure out the issue?
I had to have my transmission replaced on my 2010... thankfully under warranty.
