After dropping off my son at daycare this morning I encountered an unexpected problem: I was able to get moving from a stopped position, but once I started moving I was unable to successfully shift up. I quickly gave up trying for safety's sake (I'm glad I didn't still have the baby in the car by then) and pulled over. Had the Jeep towed to my mechanic thinking it was a transmission problem. The mechanic and I just gave it a try and noticed that somehow the shifting apparatus has itself shifted positions so that the only gears that can be reached are 2, 4 and N. In fact, in order to be in neutral you need to push the shifter all the way to the top where 1, 3 and 5 usually are.
He told me that it is good news that the entire clutch isn't gone or that it needed major repairs. I'm curios if this sounds like something you've seen or heard of before and how it might have happened. Also, how much (ballpark) might it cost to fix. The mechanic said that it seems like a "linkage issue," and will look into it further over the next day or so to see if that's true.
