Added Weight Cause Vehicle Not to Start?

Hello,

I own a 2007 Compass, Standard Transmission. Yesterday I was loading some 3-4' logs in the back of my Jeep to take home and process into firewood. I had turned the vehicle off while loading up the logs and when I was ready to leave the Jeep would not turn over. A clicking sound commenced and I needed to get jumped to start up again. When I got home and unloaded the logs I turned the Jeep off and then started it up again, this time with no problem. Later in the evening I tried to start it again after it had been parked and off for several hours, and again it turned on with no problem.

Can added weight in the back of the vehicle cause it to refuse to turn on? Is there a gas switch that turns off or a battery issue going on here? I had to replace the alternator in June so I don't think it is a charging issue.

I realize now that the Compass perhaps is not optimal for doing the job of another Jeep or pick-up truck.

Nothing that weight would affect. The shift in the body angle may cause a cable to move a bit. Anytime you get work done EG alternator its possible a ground which may have been removed is not on tight etc You might want to check the cables are tight on the posts of the battery. I doubt anything was disconnected underneath other than the AC compressor had to be dropped down while its electrical plug removed won't cause that.

Jump start would imply its something at your battery area. Maybe a fluke, how old is the battery it may be going out.

If you've never changed the battery since 2007, it may be reaching the end of it's lifespan. Let us know if it happens again even after you've unloaded the logs.

I would get the battery checked out. When you were putting in the logs, did you have any lights on or anything? How long did it take you to put in the logs? How far is the drive from where you boosted it to your house ?
