2010 Jeep Compass - CVT Trans Codes

I just purchased a 2010 Jeep Compass 4x4 (my first jeep) - I took it in for a pre-purchase inspection and they are recommending that I take it to a transmission shop as it has CVT trans codes showing up in the diagnostics test - As it is a long weekend I will not be able to get it in to a shop until tues (and am unsure if I should just return it to the purchaser or pay to take it to an transmission shop).

Any one have these codes before any suggestions as to what the issue/s may be?

Did they tell you what the actual codes are? If so, Google-fu can yield you some good idea of what each code actually means.

CVT are not repairable. Once there is a problem they have to be replace.

Return it to the dealer. Should have been checked out first. If you bought it privately you are stuck very likely ownership is in your name now.

All they told me is codes are showing up and I should see a transmission specialist - the transmission seems to be performing fine - and tested fine - transmission specialist is just a recommendation from the inspection. My stepdad said it could be as simple as the programming needs an upgrade. Just curious if anyone else has had this before -

Well you can call major transmission shops but last I heard other than CCVT fluid changes they weren't doing any CVT's maybe thats changed if there is sufficient expertise out there etc. Being on a tight timeline I assume to find out what is going on. You'd have to take it to a Jeep Dealer who can address the codes they read and check as well as update software for your vehicle. Its positive to hear at least its performing fine.

The shop reading the codes should not have cleared them as they know its needed by whomever you take it to. Worst case in my opinion is you're out an hours labour to check codes and update software would not take that long. Then see what they say. How many miles on it? With a signature we can see that info without asking as well as the powertrain you have. Approx 120,000km is the fluid change interval here.

Good luck with it. If the original owner did not visit a dealer much there definitely are many software releases for that year correcting various problems so its almost a must to take it to a dealer. Tell the service advisor you want all the updates done after these codes are read. Try and talk to the mechanic as well.

Thank you - My cousin works in service for Jeep so I'm going to take it to him. It's 153,000 KM so I'm really hoping its a simple fix Cuz I'm already attached to it lol.

Well then you already have a leg up on it with him. It was the first year of some key changes of which he should be aware of. It should be a walk in the park for him to get the software (engine & CVT) updated. Once thats done and if all look well in their diagnostics a good long drive or two will reveal if the code come back after they clear them. Unfortunately its overdue for a fluid change unless it was done. A few local dealer here want $400 for that CVT service. OUCH I will look around though. You would get a discount through him.

Thank you for the input I really appreciate it - buying a new vehicle is always stressful and I always expect the worst. I am lucky to have both my stepdad as a service manager for Chrysler (but 8 hours away) and my Cousin (whom I did not think of until after I stressed out) - He ran the diagnostics and he didn't find any error codes and everything seems fine with it. It could be as simple as Canadian Tire not knowing the CVT transmission (as they recommended a tranny shop but the reality is that there is a limited number of tranny shops that deal with the CVT). SO I am happy to say I'm officially a Jeep owner...step up from my Dodge SX 2.0

Very good to hear that. Odd, oh well if there are issues they will appear later on. A simple code check will reveal them. But as you had it tested then I have to say you should be ok. You did not mention if there was a discussion on CVT service being done. Sinces its over due if not already done.

Its worth the drive regardless of distance to get a reliable assessment and quality service. I have found out they're not created equal after 4 dealers i used only one was shinny brightly compared to others.

He said the fluids are clean, the carproof doesn't tell me what was done but looking back it appears the maintenance has been kept up and nothing is required at this time. Definitely having 2 family members working for Chrysler (one close one far away) is reassuring.
