Exclamation 2018 Jeep Compass Reversing while in drive

Last Thursday my 2018 Jeep compass, purchased 1 month ago with 5000 miles on it, kept moving backwards while in drive after reversing out of a parking spot. The engine light came on, and a message "Shift the car to P, then to desired gear". I did just that, but it still moved backwards while in drive. Then the wheel and brakes locked, the parking brake was stuck on, the electronic system was on but the engine was off, and I could not turn the car completely on or off. In order to stop blocking traffic and try to get the car working, I disconnected the car battery and waited a few minutes. After reconnecting, the car turned on normally and I put it in drive. The car did begin to move forward, but all of a sudden jolted backwards. I slammed on the brakes, put the car in park and back to drive, where it moved forward long enough for me to pull back into my original parking spot.

I had the car towed to my dealer, who is saying that my disconnecting the battery wiped all error codes, and the car of course is now working perfectly fine for them. Any suggestions? I am obviously nervous about driving a car that spontaneously reverses, especially when the dealership hasn't found anything to fix.

That sounds like some bad juju. The shifter feels so mechanical, I assumed it was a regular linkage connection to the transmission but the more I think about it, it must be electronically shifted because the car is able to shift into neutral on its own if, say, you open the door and take your seatbelt off (I think it has done this to me before?). Whatever mechanism handles the shifting sounds out of sorts.

Many electrical gremlins lurking in these cars, but this is the first I have heard of such shifting problems.

My general advice for anyone who has intermittent bizarre issues off and on: Be ready with your phone to record wonky things as they happen. Many of us have had issues that could not be reproduced on-demand, showing my dealer video proof was sometimes the only way to convince them something was truly wrong. Be safe though, don't try to record stuff while driving on the highway, have a passenger do it if possible or even look into a cheap dash cam.

I don't know if I believe that pulling the battery cable really erases any codes, sounds like you are getting schluffed off to me.

Hi sk21,
We certainly understand why this may be concerning. Please send us a private message if this continues to happen as we would like to have this documented and looked into further.
