I was curious if I could replace my engine on my 2012 Jeep Compass Sport 4x4 2.4L First generation.
If so what would be the best engine to replace it with? Is it worth it?
I understand that CVT engine is a problem and will be in the future.
Is your engine broken? Are you having problems with your CVT transmission?
When was the last time you changed your CVT fluid?
Is your fluid more than 50 k miles?
If so I suggest you change your fluid asap.
How old are your spark plugs? Are they more than 70K miles old? If so then change them asap.
Clean your engine bay and check your air filter. If your filter is dirty your engine will not last. It is the abrasive dust that goes in your engine that kills your rings, pistons and cylinders.
The engine in the Jeep is a good engine.Keep the engine bay clean.
Here's a tip. If you start hearing grinding noises and if it seems to be coming from the timing chain side most likely it is only the alternator pulley going bad.If you take it to the dealer he might tell you to change the entire alternator and charge you 600 dollars. If it is charging it is not bad just change the pulley $40.00 part.
Inspect your rear engine mount. If the rubber iscracked or broken you will hear strange noises which you might think is coming from your suspension.
Yes after changing the spark plug and the CVT Fluid and transmission filter. I will clean the engine bay and keep it clean as much as possible.
Thanks a lot for those tips.
I have a question tho, I keep hearing a noise (knocking noise) like something is hitting the bottom of my car when I'm at red light on D but I put it on N the noise goes away. It feels like the engine is rumbling or something is tapping on the engine, maybe the cover?
This type of noise can come from many areas. Perhaps if you can put the car on the lift you might be able to explore or inspect things as mounts or exhaust omponents. You might try using a rubber mallet to tap on the parts to see if they make the noise you describe.
Glad you found the source of the noise. Noise is something I really hate in any vehicle. It is so annoying especially when I am trying to enjoy some music.
Also glad to hear that your car is responding very well to your fluid and spark plug change.
Allow me to tell you a little story. A few months ago I changed all 4 tires on my Jeep. I took it to a well known tire shop in my area. But I was disappointed when I took a one hour trip because I could feel that the wheels were not balanced well. So I took the car back to the tire shop. They redid the balancing. If they did it right the first time then their time and mine will not have been wasted. So my advise is if you get a new set of tires make sure you let them know that if they do not do a good job balancing the tires that you will come back for rebalance. It was such a needless waste of time for both parties involved.
Here's another tip. Protect the undercarriage from rusting. I heard some horror stories about some vehicles with rusted out sub frames.
If you are in an area where they use road salt most likely your car will be attacked by rust.
My advise is to attack the rust before the problem gets big.
Wash the undercarriage often and inspect it for any rust. You can buy spray cans of Rustoleum rust converter.
Spray directly to the rust to stop it from growing deep. The treated area can be painted because that area will become hard and stop the rust. The paint will help keep the treatment more or less permanent plus it will look good. Use fluidfilm or similar products to protect areas with no rust.
A rotted sub frame is very dangerous.
Wear a mask or some type of safety gear so you don't inhale any of the sprayed stuff.

Thanks for all the tips and I always make sure that it's balance and I often check for alignment as well if needed. My problem isn't the rust but the rain where I live.
So my other issue now is that I have a leak from my sunroof... Such a pain in the butt... really. My front and rear (mostly) passenger side is all wet, had a small puddle. Now I gotta go and fix that, not sure who can actually do that as I don't really want to go to the stealership unless it's the last thing I need to do.
I have checked the front driver side for the AC plug, in front of the windshield and near the battery on the right the little tube, they were all fine. So I really suspect that the cause of the flood is from the sunroof.
Usually headliner fabric around the sunroof is also wet/damp if its leaking up there. If you don't use it a lot of people buy a cheap tube of black bathroom silicone and permanently seal theirs shut. Pull the fuse so nobody accidentally hits the button to open it. Just an idea. Or to fix properly there is probably a new glass seal you could purchase and install.
Usually cars with factory sunroofs have a drain that goes down the pillar and down to vent to the ground.. Check around where the sunroof lives to see if you can find this drainage.
Aftermarket sunroofs might not have this but then again they are smaller and only relies on seals for water resistance.
Dirt, leaves or even insects might cause a blockage.
Another tip for you guys. If your engine misfires due to bad plugs or coils better fix it asap because misfires cause problems for the catalytic converter which is very expensive to fix.
A misfiring engine can make you think that your transmission is shot especially on cvt equipped cars.
I also responded to another post of yours. I can't see any reason why not, but I suggest you get a few more opinions than mine. I know at least one person replaced a 2.4 with a 2.0, not realizing the engines look alike. That person was, of course, disappointed by the power difference, but that was only due to the difference in displacement, not that it was done wrong.
Did you change the Coolerreturn Filter? That's verry important.
