ETC problems, need a new PCM?

First off: 2007 Jeep Compass. 2wd, 2.4L. 104K

About 2 months ago, the day after about an 800 mile road trip, my ETC light came on as I was leaving my driveway. Complete loss of power and could not accelerate past 20 mph. I turned the car off, let it sit for a mintue and restarted and everything was fine. I attributed the issue to the long road trip and didnt pay it much mind.

About 2 weeks ago, upon starting the Compass, the ETC light would flicker and be gone and everything drove just fine. I had the codes pulled just to get an idea of what might be going on and the code came bacl "running too rich" (dont know the code number, just what the guy told me) At this point I had the computer "flashed" and the car ran great after that.

Then, just yesterday while I am driving with my 6 month old daughter, the Compass completely gives out on the road. ETC light on, flashing ESP light on. NO acceleration, and when I came to a stop, the engine was running so rough it felt like it was going to die. I turned the car off, restarted it and same thing happens. Luckily I made it home and decided to have car towed as it was pretty much undrivable.

Mechanic could not find the issue for the longest time. First the changed the spark plugs (as one was loose) and that has not fixed the issue. Now they tell me I need a NEW pcm, with parts and labor will run me $850. I called my dealership and they can do the same procedure for almost half the cost. SO needless to say, I need to shop around here.

After all this, my question is: what the heck can I do about this ETC? Just reading on this forum it seems like the kiss of death. Do I really need a new PCM or just a software update? Any feedback is much appreciated and I can give you more of the car's symptoms if you need.

PLEASE HELP!!!

Well over a week on this forum and 80 some views and no replies. Seems like no one has a suggestion or solution for this problem, nor does my Jeep dealership.

Just an update. Battery replaced, spark plugs replaced, PCM replaced and STILL having electronic throttle control issues. My Jeep dealership has basically thrown their hands up and says they don't know what to do. Meanwhile, I am in for over $1000 and no end in sight. Is this even legal? I mean I still owe over $5000 on the car and it IS only a 2007 model. Are these Jeeps just manufactured that poorly or what? I am calling Jeep customer care line this week, and that will probably go nowhere. How can Jeep sell these cars that just go out in the middle of traffic almost KILLING me and my 6 month old baby. I have filed a complaint with the NHTSA and with our government's model efficiency, that should yield some quick results.

Anger does not begin to describe how I feel right now. What should I do ?
Anybody out there? Can anyone help?

It needs to be isolated otherwise pure guess work hence other may not have replied if they read this. There are plenty of discussion onf reliability and problem areas in various subforums. I my opinion you should have taken it to the dealer first few mechanics can analyse the electronic and programable modules in this vehcile so you waisting your money.

Hello Abmccarville,

Sorry about your recent experience with your Compass. When did you have your vehicle serviced at an FCA certified dealership? Who was your servicing FCA certified dealer? If you could please private message me your VIN and contact information, so I can look further into this.

My 2009 Jeep Compass loses power after driving for 5 or 10 minutes. I stop at stop light and when the light turns green I step on the gas and the engine does not respond. I turn the engine off for 30 seconds and start again for another 5 minutes normally until the next stop. Also the engine, I think, seems to start whining until I give it another rest and start again. Never had a problem until now and coincidently after I had the thermostat replaced 2 days earlier. WTF?

Hi Stirling,

Did a Jeep dealership perform the repair? Have you let them know so they can address whether or not the events are related? That might be a good place to start!
