General Tire Tread Question

This question is for those in snowy areas. At what tire tread depth do tires need to be replaced so they still perform fairly well in the snow/ice? I had read an article that said 6/32" but I was just wondering if anyone had any personal experience. I'm curious to find out what others have experienced.

If memory serves 2-3 32's is a dead tire past its life. Wear bare level and unsafe. Another 3 is not a whole lot more. If this is an all season you need what looks pretty good shape. Snow tires have much deeper lugs.
