Want bigger thicker comfortable tires..

I have a 2014 Jeep Compass, high altitude addition, 2 wheel drive that came with P215/55 18R tires. How big can I go to make it a smoother ride..the stock tires are rough, loud and have a high pitch annoying sound when going over 55 mph. I mainly put highway miles on it at above 70 mph. Please help me!

Personally I would go to a different wheel because I think 55 series tires on a Jeep is insane, but assuming you stay with the 18's and are doing on road driving only - I would look at 225/60r18 size tires. Something like a Cooper CS5 Ultra Touring. A good source for tire ratings and reviews of all tires in a specific size is the Tire Rack website.
Again, personally I would sell off the 18" wheel and tire set and put the money towards something more appropriate. There are lots of tire and wheel options in 16" diameter, which would easily get you up to a 65 or 70 series tire.
