Wouldn't the powertrain control module need to be completely reprogrammed since it's not recognizing the presence of a PTU, RDA, and other mechanical drivetrain components critical to 4WD operation? Limp home is designed to activate only when a condition is detected which could result in transmission damage. If the PCM believes that something crucial is missing or something unfamiliar has been introduced that could adversely affect operating temperature/pressure/whathaveyou, then it makes sense it would trigger Limp Home Mode.
