Welcome! Two things to check:
1) Some (not all) Patriots have had premature frame rust. Have a qualified mechanic check it over, with special attention to the frame to be sure it is solid.
2) If it has the automatic transmission, it is a CVT. The CVT should have its filters and fluids changed at least every 50,000 miles. Since the owners manual says twice that, many Patriots did not have their fluids changed soon enough or often enough. Yours should have been changed twice by now -- or at least once, but really twice. If the seller can prove it's been done, I'd risk it. If not, assume it will need a new transmission soon. The CVT usually can't be repaired, only replaced.
In today's market there isn't much available for less than $5000. Whatever you buy, regardless of brand, it will need some work because chances are the seller is trying to avoid repair bills. Aside from the transmission, Patriots are otherwise pretty solid vehicles.
If you buy this Patriot or another, there's lots of help on this site. Maybe we'll see you around here.
