Was told it would cost around $2000 to repair my rotted rear subframe. I have 86,000 miles on it! 2 years ago the dealership replaced the front crossmember due to rotting as a recall. I had it in the shop 6 months ago for replacing the ignition coils for the 3rd time in 3 years! That's another defective issue! Their free vehicle inspection noted nothing wrong, just needed new tires. So my subframe rotted away in less than 6 months?! I am furious! I hope the extended warranty will cover this! I live in Michigan and am the second owner.

Those vehicle inspection reports are useless. They keep saying they checked the 4wd system . . . on my FWD Patriot!

In the case of a rusty subframe, I wonder if you were trading it in, if they would check any more thoroughly?

What year is your Compass? I'm curious to know if the frame is covered.

Welcome
To Compass. Sorry to hear about your issues. Hopefully it is coved. If not , let Stellantis know in case they expand the years that are covered. Save receipts in case.

My compass is a 2011. I just read that compass/Patriot years 2008-2012 and Dodge Calibers 08-12 have an extended 10 year front and rear crossmember corrosion (X69 warranty extension)

Stellantis is the new owner of Jeep. They are a conglomerate that owns all the former Chrysler brands and several European makes as well. I hope they cover your warranty, but it looks like you are past the 10 year window.

I just got head office to approve the front crossmember/subframe replacement under warranty/recall (despite it expired), however the dealership still quoted $1200 because all components attached to the subframe also need to be replace for safety issues.

Does this sound right? Dealership say they have no choice but to replace those too. Head office says its the dealership's responsibility to ensure safety of related parts and those parts are not covered by warranty.

I am starting to consider if its still worth it, or if my rotted subframe will survive another 2 to 3 years.

What do you guys think?

I answered your other post. Basically, I think the dealer is treating you fairly -- those other parts are probably original and getting near the end of their serviceable life. You may as well have them do it all now. If you replaced all those parts piecemeal you'd be paying for labor every time.

FYI, when my transmission leaked, it was covered under warranty. My dealer offered to change the transmission filters for the cost of the parts when they repaired the leak because Jeep was already paying for the new gasket, the new fluid and the labor. That was about $50. If I'd had the fluid and filter changed a few months later when it was due, I would have paid $400+/-.

Again, I think your dealer is saving you money in the long run.

Thanks for the reply.

Its just that I don't want to invest a lot into an old car.

Interestingly, my dealer did include labor for the other parts he is replacing, even though the subframe labor is supposed to be covered.

$1200 still seems high considering i am not having any problems with any of the other parts.

In life, almost everything is a gamble, especially vehicles. You have to decide if your Patriot is a money pit or if you've had relatively few problems.

Consider, I had a 2008 Patriot that had a wiring problem at 210,000 miles. I debated putting out $1200 for a new harness on a vehicle with that many miles, but I also realized I hadn't spent much on repairs to that point, so I went ahead and got the new harness. I got another 75,000 miles out of it. I've since sold that Patriot to a friend and it's still on the road at 305,000 miles.

On the other hand I had a Cherokee that was a raft of problems at a mere 25,000 miles. Although the repairs were covered under warranty I was a sales & service rep on the road and if that vehicle didn't move then I didn't work. I lost patience with it and traded for an Oldsmobile that was among the best cars I've ever owned.

Like I said, it's a gamble. If your Patriot has been good to you this far, I'd stick with it. My Dad used to say that any car is worth one major repair; he also said the cheapest car you'll ever own is the one you own today. That's the same man that got rid of his Chevy Nova at 30,000 miles because it was a constant problem.

Finally, consider that the used car market is very expensive right now because it's nearly impossible to buy a new one. If you've got a dealer that's ready & willing to do the work, you're probably best to bite the bullet and get it fixed.

Update: I found a good.mechanic that helped me. He basically patched my broken pipe. He welded and put a plate in it for $200. So far so good.

I have an extra subframe for a first generation front wheel drive only. I purchased it without knowing there would be a difference for the awd models. If it would be of any help I would gladly sell it reasonably. I have also completed a full replacement etc. I would be happy to share my learning experiences.
