Hello, my wife owns a 2012 Jeep Compass Latitude 4WD 4 Cylinders B 2.4L FI DOHC . I'm currently away on an extended business trip, and she had a failure described as "weird knocking, loss of power, vehicle struggles to run or accelerate". She didn't feel safe driving it and had it towed to a local mechanic; not a dealer. They took a look and said it was the "rods" in the engine.

I'm a DIY guy, but I'm not a mechanic by any means. I'm assuming they are referring to the piston rods, which is a pretty significant mechanical failure and means basically an engine replacement. Given what the vehicle is worth, we're considering junking it rather than attempting a repair. I've never liked the CVT, and I've been reading about a lot of issues. It occasionally threw an error code for the catalytic converter, which I thought might just be a bad O2 sensor because it would go away.

I'm curious if this is a known failure, and if it would be worth potentially having it towed to a dealership to see if there's any kind of warranty coverage, etc. Any thoughts or insight on this? I appreciate it.

Hi Patrick! If you and your wife decide to bring the Jeep to the attention of a certified dealership and need some extra support, feel free to let our team know.

I don't see much about failed world engines on this site. I'll ask the obvious, was it run out of oil. Presuming not, your case is very strange indeed.

Considering how many Compasses have been junked due to failed transmissions, a replacement engine may not be hard to find.

The other obvious question is, how many miles on your Compass?
