Hello, my wife owns a 2012 Jeep Compass Latitude 4WD 4 Cylinders B 2.4L FI DOHC . I'm currently away on an extended business trip, and she had a failure described as "weird knocking, loss of power, vehicle struggles to run or accelerate". She didn't feel safe driving it and had it towed to a local mechanic; not a dealer. They took a look and said it was the "rods" in the engine.
I'm a DIY guy, but I'm not a mechanic by any means. I'm assuming they are referring to the piston rods, which is a pretty significant mechanical failure and means basically an engine replacement. Given what the vehicle is worth, we're considering junking it rather than attempting a repair. I've never liked the CVT, and I've been reading about a lot of issues. It occasionally threw an error code for the catalytic converter, which I thought might just be a bad O2 sensor because it would go away.
I'm curious if this is a known failure, and if it would be worth potentially having it towed to a dealership to see if there's any kind of warranty coverage, etc. Any thoughts or insight on this? I appreciate it.
