Hi everyone, I have a 2015 compass 4x4. Its making a humming noise that starts at around 10mph and gets louder the faster you go. It sounds like it's coming from the bottom of the car. The noise doesn't change when turning traction control off, 4x4 lock on, or changing gears. I didnt notice anything wrong with the cv shafts or U joints. It sounds like something is tied to the driveshaft and is hitting the underside of the car, if that makes sense but there isnt anything there. The noise doesn't seem to effect how the car drives, there are no vibrations and the car drives straight.
CVT? I had an internal bearing go out at 110,000 miles. It made a humming noise, similar to what a conventional a/t makes when its failing. Fortunately mine was covered under the lifetime warranty.
However, mine didn't sound like anything was rubbing as you describe. That was a couple years ago. As I recall my hum was in sync with the vehicle speed.
Its the 6 speed auto not the CVT, It shifts fine and the noise doesnt change at all when shifting. If it was the transmission I would think the noise would change based on the gear but I could be thinking about that wrong.
I hope its only a wheel bearing. I've replaced a couple on my Patriot but before they were making any noise. I remember when the axle bearing went south on my Dad's old Chevy; it howled like a B-52 flying overhead!
One more thought, if your alignment is going out and you recently rotated your tires, a tire with uneven wear can make a humming noise when placed in a new position.
Yea it was a rear wheel bearing, Im at 95K miles though. 35k seems a bit early for a bearing so it could be a tire. Can you tell where the sound is coming from?
You can rotate your tires and see if the sound moves.
I ended up jacking up the car off of all 4 wheels and put it in drive with 4x4 on. Then I just listened to each wheel to hear which bearing was making noise. If the noise isn't there at all then you know its most likely a tire.
You could very well have a warped flywheel this could be causing one of the balancer weights on the flywheel to hit the dust pan between the engine and transmission definitely need to get that fixed cause it can cause additional damage to main bearings and seals in time hope this was helpful good luck
Oh well. It was the rear wheel bearings. 35k miles. It was out of warranty as far as time (2016), but the dealer, (Rocky Top Jeep) replaced both rear wheel hubs as a courtesy and only charged me a $100 deductible. Not bad at all. I was expecting $500-600.
