I’ve read a lot of people having trouble with a whining sound coming from transmission, mine particularly happens during 3rd gear change. It’s an automatic transmission. I have had it at the dealer several times and they can’t find anything wrong with it. They say wait until a check engine light comes on. Really? Obviously I think it’s because they don’t want to give me a new transmission. Has anyone had a diagnosis with this problem??
Thank you

Mine has been making that whining sound for well over 100,000 miles. My Trailhawk has 169,000 miles on it.
Dealer and Factory engineers looked over mine could not find anything wrong. They said keep driving it so I have and yes it's very irritating. But it keeps working and the whining has not increased or decreased.

Interesting, thank you for the reply. My car only has 23,000 mi and I’m not thinking I’ll have it for as long as you lol …and yes very irritating!

Does the noise go away if you switch off the traction control? If so, it's an easy fix. Do not leave your traction control off because it is a safety device; I'm just suggesting it as a test to verify if that is the noise you are hearing.

Your noise is normal and present in all Compasses. It was particularly noticeable in my 2018. Elsewhere on this site I learned about an update. You can read that thread here. TSB 08-095-18 Is this the fix for our drivetrain issues? It worked for me. The TSB 08-095-18 doesn't make the noise go away, but it raises the speed at which the noise occurs to around 45MPH where it is pretty much drowned out by road noise.

My 2019 Compass only makes the grumbling sound up around 45+ where the update would have moved it. Apparently new Compasses are updated before they leave the factory.

My dealer didn't know about the TSB, but when I gave them the number the service writer looked it up and said, "OK, no problem." It took about 30 minutes and it didn't cost me anything.

Jasmine, This is something totally different than what you are referencing. I have had TSB done.
This noise as best as I can describe it is more of a harmonic sound or (sliding C sharp note played on a trumpet LOL)
Just as the vehicle shifts going from 4th to 5th gear. (Remember Trailhawks only uses 1st for Rock Mode) so it always starts out in 2nd gear. I don't know about non trailhawk models.
Dealership looked at mine and a Factory Engineer came they had this thing all a part for days. Put it all back together and said drive it. So I have and it just keeps going. The issue is not just a compass issue it is a 9 speed transmission issue as other models that use this transmission also have reported the same noise. Another member posted this. Very similar to what I have been putting up with.
