I've was wanting the new redesigned 2019 Cherokee since it came out to upgrade from my 2013 Patriot. I started to compare bang for the buck and decided on the Compass Latitude 4x4 for multiple reasons.


1. You can only tow 2000lbs with the 2.4l and in both models and you will pay a premium for the Cherokee's V6 with tow package for the 4500lbs towing capacity

2. As big as the Cherokee is, it only has the bare minimal advantage on front and rear passenger room

3. The Compass has more Cargo room

4. Both come with basically the same option groups and audio/uconnect multimedia

Below is some info I used to compare from the Jeep site

I am actually surprised that Jeep even offered Compass in the first place. Although they are not fully in the same segment, a loaded Compass and base to mid level Cherokees almost cost the same. So it is almost like two cars from the same manufacturing are competing for the same consumer target. I assume they are trying to dominate the small SUV market by having more than one horse in the race.

Or if they offered the turbo 4 and or V6 in the Compass would their need to be a Cherokee

I had to drive a Cherokee for a month while my Compass was in the shop. The Cherokee got the same fuel mileage (right around 30 mpg at 65 mph) on the 300 mile loop I drive. It has better storage for the little things, like your sunglasses and phone and other items. Ride quality is better.
More room with the back seats up for suite cases, golf clubs. So if I had to choose between the two I would pick the Cherokee. Going through all the issue that I have with my compass since day one. I would not even be looking at a FCA product.

I had a 2015 Cherokee for 3 years and when the lease time ended, I took a 2018 Compass, because the 2019 Cherokee was not available at this time. After a few weeks, first doubts came on me, that I did something wrong. I’m not a small person and that’s the problem. The headrest does not fit to me, always pressing my neck. I would need to move it more up, but that’s not possible. Another thing, what’s not really well designed, is the dashboard. UConnect screen and A/C panel are located too low and the mounting angle is not very ergonomic.
20.000km later, I’m still working to find a comfortable drivers seat setup. 2 weeks ago, I brought the Compass in for first service and the dealer gave me a 2017 Cherokee as a loaner. Before I even could start the engine, I felt like „I’m back home“. So, I’m really awaiting the arrival of the 2019 Cherokee to Germany, what should be happen by end of the year. If there is a chance for me to get one, I will grab it.

That's one of the only down sides im seeing right now

Go with the Cherokee. The Compass is built off the Fiat 500 Platform. This platform is also used for the Jeep Renegade. The Fiat platform is crap. Basically, the Compass, Renegade and Fiat 500X are the same car. Trust me as I Have been working at Chrysler for 28 years. The above mentioned cars are not well executed vehicles.

The Jeep Cherokee is built in the USA and designed to be a real Jeep, not a poser like the above mentioned vehicles.

LMFAO, nothing to back up your claims just the fact you dont like the platform and the real Jeep comment has to be the dumbest I've read in a while

All manufacturers platform share and have done for years, this does not necessarily make it a bad thing.

Looking at it from the other side, would you prefer a bespoke but relatively low volume platform or a proven platform that has been produced many million times more?

Lol this is funny because Cherokee uses the same platform with Alfa Romeo Giulietta, Dodge Dart/Fiat Viaggio/Ottimo, Chrysler 200 and like any other car or truck produced by FCA, it is also designed by Fiat.

I would definitely prefer a car built by a manufacturer that didn't got bankrupt and got bought by Chrysler, go bankrupt again and merged with Mercedes and still got bankrupt again and got bought by Fiat. If jeep or Chrysler , on their own, produced cars vastly superior, they would still be around without being bought by other companies.

Do people who sh*t on Fiat know that they produce Maserati and until 2016, also produced Ferrari.

Actually, the Jeep Cherokee was designed at the Chrysler Technology Center in Auburn Hills, MI. Fiat had nothing to do with the design. While platforms may be shared, all Jeeps are designed and styled by Chrysler employees.

Officially, Cherokee is considered a Fiat/Chrysler co-development. It is impossible for Fiat to give Chrysler engineer full autonomy over a new car after buying a company that just went bankrupt. The only parts Fiat might have "nothing to do with" the Cherokee is the look (which they should have) and the pentastar V6. All other parts including the platform, transmission, majority of the drive-train components, majority of the electronics, and all other engine options are Fiat built or supplied.

This is not an issue (Fiat is the 8th largest car manufacturer in the world and it is the largest growing one), but in your other post you criticized compass for sharing a platform with Fiat 500. And now you are saying sharing platforms is not important. Regardless of where the car is built, they all need to be built using the parts either manufactured or supplied by Fiat.

This is the same complaint I heard when I had my 2013 Jeep Patriot being built on the Dodge caliber platform and also not being a real Jeep. With the Patriot Freedom Drive 1 4x4 system there wasn't a place it couldn't go that I wanted to. Between hunting farmlands and back of woods in NY to 12+ snow storms I've never had a problem locking in the 4 wheel drive and never thinking of getting stuck. Now with the new 2nd gen Compass and the same BLD diff and now with the Selec-Terrain® Traction Management System all my Compass would need is a good set of all terrain tires and I would expect the same if not better performance. I believe Jeep is doing something right with the small to med-sized SUV's they are coming out with whether it be the now Renegade, Compass or Cherokee being the more capable SUV's on the market even without the Trailhawk packages equipped

dude, do you really want to get in a debate regarding this? Twenty eight years working direct for Chrysler - it is safe to assume I know my stuff. So, if you read my post, you will notice I indicated the Jeep Cherokee AND all Dodge, Chrysler and Ram products are DESIGNED and Engineered in the USA. Unless my eyes deceive me, I see all Jeep vehicles being styled in the design studios where not one Fiat employee is present. With Sergio Marchionne gone, FCA's CEO is Mike Manley who was a Chrysler employee before FCA. Parts are sourced from various suppliers all over the world. Many of these suppliers supply parts for the Asian brands, German brands and the other domestic manufacturers. The only in house parts built by Chrysler are Engines, Drive Trains and BIW parts. Many of the parts used in the drivetrains and engine are sourced parts. Most of the body panels and sheet metal structure are also in house but, lately, suppliers are coming onboard to build sub assemblies such as hydro form front end modules and underbody ladder systems.


YES, the Jeep Compass shares a platform with the Fiat 500. Sharing platforms is crucial. For example, the new Jeep Grand Wagoneer share the same platform as the new Ram. The Wagoneer will be offered in two wheelbases: short and long. But, and I will say this again slowly. All Jeep, Chrysler, Dodge and Ram vehicles are designed and engineered in the USA at the Chrysler Tech Center. The Compass is built in Mexico for the US market and also built in Eastern Europe for the European market. The Cherokee is built in Belvidere, ILL. The Grand Cherokee and Durango, both share the same platform (Also shared by Mercedes as this platform was developed during the DaimlerChrysler days) are built in Detroit, MI.

As for the bankruptcy: The US Government and Auto Task Force provided Chrysler with funding providing Chrysler receives new management. Fiat came in and created a new management team. sadly, no other auto company wanted Chrysler. Had Fiat not come in to take over, Chrysler would be dead. Additionally, many parties had to take a "haircut" including the UAW. Had the UAW not accepted concession when the contract was reopened, Fiat would not come aboard. However, they did not disrupt Chrysler engineering and styling. What they did was create synergies so both companies could share platforms and suppliers. Fiat DID NOT BUY CHRYSLER. However, years ago, Chrysler bought AMC which included Jeep and AMC. Chrysler quickly dismantled AMC and created the Eagle brand. Eagle, along with Plymouth are now history.

Shall I go on or will you accept you have just been schooled? I walk in to the Chrysler Tech Center every morning; I doubt you can compete with that.

Here is a little known fact: The first generation Compass, Patriot and Dodge Caliber are all the same car. Whereas the Jeep models received Jeep treatment: 4x4 capabilities, etc. The Caliber was dropped due to poor sales. The Compass and Patriot continued on until the new Compass was launched. There will be no new Patriot.
