I'm wondering if all you compass owners with the cvt transmission notice if there's quite a holding back of the vehicle when you take your foot off the accelerator pedal. Sort of like a jake brake or engine retarder feeling. This happens especially at very slow speeds like coming to a stop or red light. This has been getting more noticeable lately. Any thoughts?

Yes, i have..

I have felt that "braking" sensation. I like it actually!!, the engine braking reduces the amount of pressure i need to apply to the brakes. Hopefully i will notice less wear during the brake inspection.

definitely noticed it the first time I drove it.

Can't help but wonder how much fuel economy is left in this cvt if it were tuned better.

Ok, here goes. I asked someone about this the other day, because I noticed it ever since I first drove the car.

The way it was explained to me is this is a technology referred to as engine braking. Basically, what happens is when you take your foot off the accelerator, the CVT sends a message to the engine via a sensor that there is no longer a load on the transmission. The engine sensor responds by retarding acceleration, automatically slowing the car down, most times before the brake is even applied.

Seems as though this is being used in other make/model vehicles as well. Sure am glad I know so many mechanics, because I am obviously not an electrician, which you almost have to be these days to service cars like the Compass.
