Hi all!
New to this forum and obviously a brand new Jeep Compass owner.
Just wondering if anyone has any constructive criticism about this engine auto off/on. Whenever I come to a full stop even for a brief second the engine shuts down and restarts when I take my foot off the brake and accelerate. Seems rather awkward driving around the city because every block has a stop sign. Isn't this more wear and tear on the engine components?
Thank you.

Just shut it off. Push the little button. On the left just below your shifter.

It gets better and smother the more you use it but at times it's really annoying that's when I turn it off but it's nice to know that I can spend 3 min at a stop light and not burn any fuel doing it

No extra wear and tear. It is a feature (supposed to help save fuel) that most new cars are starting to employ. You can turn it off when you start your car if it bothers you. Also people are starting to make modules that insert into your "port" that will bypass this feature.

Just hope it doesn't malfunction and cause issues down the road since I did read some S&S system do that and yes it was from a german car maker as most of you could have guessed by now haha

Disable Automatic ESS by Default

Does anyone know if there are any official methods/steps to disable the automatic engine stop/start system (Jeep Compass 2017) by default so that it can be only used when driving in heavy traffic only?

The automatic engine stop/start system seems to be a good idea for the big city and heavy traffic, but in the small towns it doesn't look really convenient, the engine stops for 5-10 seconds and then it needs to start again.

It doesn't learn your driving habits, it functions with a programmed set of conditions that must exist before it will engage. That said you can disable it with the button. Here are ways to make it not engage without disabling it.

When at a stop use just enough brake pressure on the pedal to keep the vehicle stopped, this will not activate the start stop, pushing down farther on the brake pedal will make the vehicle turn off. With your foot on the brake the second you reduce brake pressure the vehicle will start again. After a while you basically can decide when to have it engage or not.

If the steering wheel is turned (i'm not sure what the exact threshold is) it will not activate either.

I'm glad mine does not have it. My 2015 Cherokee Trailhawk 3.2L did and I turned it off every time I got in. Jeep did put the A sticker on the driver's door window though at the factory! Guess that person never got the memo?

Agree!! Another good argument for a manual! I just can't imagine how engaging a starter over & over can possibly not have long-term effects on a vehicle! Not a fan of auto stop/start "technology". Maybe I'm just too old school....

ESS malfunction on 2017/2018 jeep compass

What do you know about ESS malfunction? When I test drove the 2017 Compass the ESS shut off at an intersection and wouldn't start back up when I took my foot off the brake. I had to shut the car down completely and restart..not after many cars honking and having to pass me in traffic, plus three rounds of lights before I got the car going again. The dealer laughed at me and said it was just low on gas and not fully charged. I naively believed him and bought the car. Same thing happened 12 days later, another intersection, another few rounds of lights, cars honking.. two months later with the car in service, driving a loaner, opening a case with Chrysler and I was in a new 2018 compass. Now four months later, same problem again.. They told me only my car and one other in the US had this problem..I don't believe it's only those two! Anyone else hear of any other "new" compass owners having the same issue of ESS shutting down the car and not starting up as it should when the foot lifts off the brake??

Oh yeah, me. Dealer has mine now for its 4th and final try.

They have replaced a body control module, proximity sensors (different issue) and are now pointing fingers at the radio and uConnect system.

Supposed to get it back in a few days, we'll see what happens......

Its a useless feature for us consumers. I turn it off every time I get in and sooner or later either I will buy a commercial feature defeat module or make one. Its only good for FCA, because they get big $$$ kickbacks from the government for implementing it in their vehicles. As far as measurably saving gas for the end consumer, most people couldn't fill a teaspoon with the amount of fuel allegedly "saved" in their day to day driving. There are a handful of non-typical scenarios under which it could potentially save a little more fuel but not enough to justify the extra cost and complexity.

They actually do help. As with anything, their level of fuel savings will vary directly with your driving pattern. If you're all highway, or have a commute too short to get the vehicle properly warmed up, then it won't do you much good. If you do a lot of city driving, then it will help. The fuel savings here isn't in the name of watching the numbers climb, it's in not watching them drop as much. Mine is about 2 mpg difference.

I am having issues with my 2018 compass start stop system as well. My dealer replaced something in the door and now because it happened they want to replace the body control module. The foreman at the dealer told me that jeep has never seen this issue before and to find it is like a needle in a haystack. Come to find out this is a issue. I sometimes think they want to keep me in the dark and think we don't know how to Google. I think jeep needs to get to the bottom of this because it really is a issue.
